The Market reports on a busy auction held at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (33)

A smaller entry of 33 Otm cattle this week met with an average of 111.37ppkg (+0.28ppkg on last week). Topping the section was WB & ME Harding, Hafan, with a 750kg Limousin cow making £1050 (140ppkg).  EE Davies, Dyffryn Gwyn, presented a 1002kg Limousin Bull making £1252.50 (125ppkg). Heifers under 48 months topped at £1088.32 for a 34 month old Aberdeen Angus weighing 716kg making £1088.32(152ppkg) from TE Lewis & Son, Abergwenlas. D L Jones, Ddol, presented a 31 month old Aberdeen Angus heifer weighing 589kg making £965.96 (164ppkg).

PRIME HOGGETS (3164)

An entry of 3164 prime hoggets selling to an average of 183.27ppkg (+14ppkg)

Super Lights (111) to 151ppkg. Others to 143ppkg from GJE Hughes & Son, Old House. Average of 133.02ppkg.

Lights (221) to 208ppkg from D E Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Others to 171ppkg from L Roberts & Son, Monksfield. Average of 158.69ppkg.

Standards (970) to 214ppkg from G Davies, Lan Farm. Others to 210ppkg from C D Jones, Bedol. Average of 177.87ppkg.

Mediums (1206) to 258ppkg & 235ppkg from J M Lewis, Pentwyn. Others to 226ppkg from G Davies, Lan Farm. Average of 190.07ppkg.

Heavies (420) to 238ppkg from J M Lewis, Pentwyn Others to 209ppkg from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Average of 182.67ppkg.

Over Weights (146) to 179ppkg from R W Llewellyn, Lynwood. Others to 175ppkg from IWL & PE Evans, Maescarneddau. Average of 162.64ppkg.

It is advised that Hoggets are belly clipped.

CULL SHEEP (2376)

An increased entry of 2376 culls this week, ewes averaged £51.78 (-£0.88 on las week). An outstanding entry from Messrs G Davies, Lan Farm, Gwynfe, reached £125.  C E Pryce, Yr Helyg, presented one ewe making £123. S J Smith, Penybryn, presented a good pen of 5 ewes making £115. An entry of 64 cull rams averaged £59.09 (-£6.70 on previous week)  Rams peaked at £118 presented by G Davies, Lan Farm, Gwynfe. Overall trade was trade was much steadier.

CULL EWE VENDORS: Please ensure all cull sheep are correctly identified when offered for sale at the market.

STORE LAMBS

An entry of 668 store lambs met with an overall top price of £65.50 for Texel x mixed and clean lambs from ED & MJ Jones, Gelli.  V E Lewis & Son, The Garn, presented  2 texel mixed/tup lambs making £63.50. Wether lambs topped at £63 from DS Griffiths & Co, Braich-Y-Fedw, for a good pen of Mule lambs. Averages of the day: Ewe lambs - £48, Mixed/Clean Lambs - £53.24, Wether Lambs- £57.28, Tup Lambs -£45.13, Mixed/Tup Lambs - £47.25.

The first entry of cade lambs on Monday proved a good trade, with just 4 present we saw a top of £18.

DAIRY COWS

An entry of 2 dairy heifers from J R D Best & Son, Pentrego Farm, made a top price of £1180.
