Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a busy auction at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.
OTMS (53)
An increased entry of 53 Otm cattle this week met with an overall average of 108.08ppkg.
Topping the Otm cow section was a British Blue 921kg cow making £1197.30(130ppkg). Two Limousin 48 – 72 month old cows from DH & JC Parry, Tynymaes, weighed 629kg and 586kg making £905.76(144ppkg) and £861.42(147ppkg) respectively. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1047.04(128ppkg) for a Charolais weighing 818kg from DP & MA Jones, Poulton Farm. A Rees and Son, Tynllwyn, presented a 576kg 30month old Limousin heifer making £1013.76 (176ppkg).
PRIME HOGGETS (3964)
An entry of 3964 prime hoggets selling to an average of 181.27ppkg
Super Lights (10) to 132ppkg from J LL Morgans & Sons, Tymawr. Average of 132ppkg.
Lights (404) to 199ppkg from DW & LE Morgan, Lower House. Others to 193ppkg from J W Jones, Blowty. Average of 163.11ppkg.
Standards (1059) to 199ppkg from J Meredith, Lodge Farm. Others to 195ppkg from D E Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Average of 176.62ppkg.
Mediums (1639) to 227ppkg from C D Jones, Bedol & H Isaac, Llwynderw. Others to 223ppkg from J A Williams, Llechwedd-Ddyrys. Average of 186.72ppkg.
Heavies (648) to 222ppkg from S H Lloyd & Sons, Penllan. Others to 211ppkg from J A Williams, Llechwedd-Ddyrys. Average of 179.72ppkg.
Over Weights (149) to 206ppkg from S H Lloyd & Sons, Penllan. Others to 186ppkg from V Jerman, Gwernydd. Average of 157.07ppkg.
It is advised that Hoggets are belly clipped.
CULL SHEEP (1374)
A smaller entry of 1374 cull sheep this week, ewes averaged £58.61 and rams averaged £75.59.
Demand was much stronger up £7 on the previous week, smaller poorer ewes sold well throughout. Ewes topped at £121 from Gedded & Co, 4 Camlad Cottages. An entry of 80 rams this week, up £3 on the previous week. Topping at £118 from DW & VM & JW Jennings, Castellan, and JL & JER Davies, Ffinnant. CULL EWE VENDORS: Please ensure all cull sheep are correctly identified when offered for sale at the market.
STORE LAMBS
Considering the time of year another pleasing entry of 400 store lambs selling to an overall average of £45.83. The average was not quite as strong as previous weeks but a firm trade overall with medium weight continental x lambs most sought after.
Top call went to D S Griffiths & Co, Braichyfedw for Texel x mixed/clean lambs to £67. Texel x tup lambs from A J & J C Daniel, Abergwydol Farm sold to £65.50 while Suffolk x theave lambs from D L G Price & Co, Bryncoch sold to £57.50.
14 cade lambs forward this week selling to an average of £14.
Store lambs to commence again from 10.30am next Monday.
IN LAMB EWES AND COUPLES
An increased entry of in lamb ewes today selling to a firmer trade being closer to lambing. Texel x As Found ewes scanned with triplets to £115 with Mules scanned triplets selling to £80. As part of the special entry, J E Bennett, Goppas sold Halfbred as Found ewes scanned with over a lamb and a half to £98 and Mule ewes to £84. The sale of store sheep concluded with a special entry of ewes with lambs at foot from R C Davies, Fronheulog. Strong Texel ewes with single lambs at foot sold to £161 with Mules with single lambs at foot selling to £140. Ewes with twins at foot sold to £155.
