Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a busy auction at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

PRIME CATTLE

An entry of 4 prime heifers this week reaching a top of 245ppkg for a 609kg Blonde D’Aquataine heifer from JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen Farm.

OTMS (36)

An increased entry in Otm’s this week which met with an overall average of 122.67ppkg.

Topping the Otm section was G Jones & Son, Yr Ogof, with a 847kg Limousin cow making £1118.04 (132ppkg). Roberts & Jones, Parc, presented a Charolais 833kg cow making £1082.90(130ppkg). IE & M Gittins, lower Ucheldre, Presented a 647kg Limousin cow making £892.86 (138ppkg).Cows 48 – 72 months topped at £1029.50(148ppkg) from E Jones & Son, Penbontpren. J G Ellis & Son, Tynewydd, presented a Charolais 35month old 680kg heifer making £1142.40 (168ppkg).

PRIME HOGGETS (3844)

An entry of 3844 prime hoggets selling to an average of 185.40ppkg

Super Lights (26) to 141ppkg from J LL Morgans, Tymawr. Others to 131pplg from M Parry, Pentregaer Average of 129.74ppkg.

Lights (473) to 185ppkg from GW & WW Jones, Hill Farm . Others to 184ppkg from V Jerman, Gwernydd. Average of 168.44ppkg.

Standards (791) to 213ppkg from GW & WW Jones, Hill Farm. Others to 211ppkg from J A Gwalchmai, 5 Minffordd. Average of 184.16ppkg.

Mediums (1512) to 245ppkg from H Isaac, Llwynderw. Others to 238ppkg from G James & Sons, Penybank. Average of 189.52ppkg.

Heavies (791) to 196ppkg from H M Powell & Son, Whitehouse. Others to 193ppkg from GA & ME Birchall & Son, Penylan. Average of 182.74ppkg.

Over Weights (220) to 218ppkg from G James & Sons, Penybank. Others to 182ppkg from J C Jones, New House Farm. Average of 171.28ppkg.

It is advised that Hoggets are belly clipped.

CULL SHEEP (2145)

An entry of 2014 ewes averaging £59, very similar to last week. Top price was £118 for a single ewe from J L Andrew, Trewern Cottage. 107 rams forward averaging £74.20(-£1 on previous week) topping at £120 from E O Griffiths & Co, Tymawr.

CULL EWE VENDORS: Please ensure all cull sheep are correctly identified when offered for sale at the market.

STORE LAMBS

Another pleasing entry for the time of year of 300 store lambs entering the market selling to an overall average of £50.74.  Top call went to G & A Orrells, Maesderwen for a pen of Mule tup lambs to £69.  Other lambs from this home sold to £68.  V E Lewis & Son, The Garn sold Texel x mixed/clean lambs to £61.50, while C J Newey, Mount Pleasant sold Texel x wether lambs to £60.50.

An entry of 44 cade lambs this week selling to a top of £27 from G T W Andrew, Blwch with an overall average of £15.30.

IN LAMB EWES AND COUPLES

WLS held a special sale of in-lamb ewes.  This included an entry of over 100 ewes from EJ & GM Trickey, Moat Farm, Caersws.  Three year old Lleyn ewes scanned with twins to a Rouge tup sold to £114 with Full Mouth ewes selling to £116 and £105.

Also forming part of the special entry was a run of Mule yearling ewes scanned with twins to a Texel tup from A J Hamer, Gwernybuarth selling from £132 to £138.

COUPLES

An increased entry of couples this week with the recent uplift in weather helping.  Ms Jackie Payne sold a Zwarble ewe with a single Suffolk lamb at foot to £165. New vendor, T E & D Jones, Penlan, Gwnnws sold Texel x ewes with twin lambs at foot to £162, £156 & £150.  H I & L J Lloyd, Weirglodd-Deg sold a Beltex ewe with twin lambs at foot to £150, while G & H Jerman, Tynyrwtra sold Texel x ewes with single lambs at to £136.

 

 

DAIRY COWS

The continued down turn in the dairy industry was reflective in the trade of the dairy cows forward on Monday which is not unexpected. K S Jones & Sons, Lane farm, presented a Holstein Friesian 1st calver sired by ‘Ronaldo’ making £980, also from the same home a Pedigree Holstein Friesian 2nd claver making £960. M Williams, Wern Holding, presented a British Friesian 1st calver making £980.
