Keeping up with the kids

Mum of three Jane Hoban from Llanerfyl, has discovered that learning to drive her computer is not as scary as she first thought.

With three children at primary school – all IT savvy – Jane realised she needed to learn how to use a computer to keep up and help them as they progress through school.

Having tracked down a new laptop online, she called into the Menter Berllan Community Enterprise Hub at Llanerfyl Village Workshops, to book some lessons with Enterprise Hub Manager and computer coach Lesley Long.

Jane said: “After just three lessons, my confidence has increased hugely. I’m really enjoying learning and have already been able to put my new skills into practice. I’ve already renewed our van insurance online, sent and received emails and am about to go shopping on eBay.”

As a yoga teacher, Jane can already see how her laptop and new skills are going to help her build her business, reach out to new clients and keep in touch with them through email and Facebook.

Enterprise Hub Manager, Lesley said: “Jane is a joy to teach. Her motivation to keep up with her children and her willingness to overcome her initial fear of technology, mean that she’s now flying along. I can see that she’s going to be very competent and confident computer user very quickly.”

Menter Berllan Community Enterprise Hub in Llanerfyl is the only registered UK Online Centre in mid-Wales offering low-cost IT skills training to the community. It aims to help anyone in the community without basic digital skills, make the most of an online life.

Lesley added “Whether we're helping people search and apply for work online, discover how the internet can support their health or spend their leisure time, we have courses and resources to help. Our Community Learner sessions start from £7.50 per hour.”
