Giant discount supermarket chain Aldi plans to build a new food store on the derelict site alongside the Smithfield Bell in Mill Lane go on show in Welshpool today

Letters have been delivered to homes and businesses in Welshpool announcing the move and inviting people to attend the public exhibition to view the proposals today at the Scout Headquarters and Community Centre between 3pm and 7pm.

Last year Powys County Council turned down proposals from Lidl to build on the site after problems with the number of parking space and access issues were highlighted but Aldi now have a scheme which they hope will be supported locally.

Aldia leading global discount supermarket chain with almost 10,000 stores in 18 countries, and an estimated turnover of more than €50bn, say they are preparing a planning proposal which would create up to 40 new jobs in Welshpool.

“The store would clear up a currently derelict site that has been described by some as an eyesore and will also provide additional choice to the existing retail offering in the area,” says the letter.

“As part of it commitment to involving the community in its planning application Aldi is holding a public exhibition for local residents to view the proposal, meet the project team and offer feedback which, where possible will be incorporated into the final planning application.”

The plan includes a new zebra crossing on Mill Lane and 90 free car parking spaces for shoppers.
