Welshpool Livestock Sales report on an auction at Buttington Cross on Monday.

PRIME CATTLE (2)

Two fat cattle forward from S M Rowlands, Dolwen farm, topping at 241ppkg for a British Blue heifer weighing 527kg. A 554kg Limousin heifer from the same home made 239ppkg.

OTMS (16)

A small entry of Otm cattle this week reaching an average of 121.32ppkg. Topping the section was DW & L Jones, Arbennig, with a 746kg Limousin otm cow making £1081.70 (145ppkg). VG & M Jones, Bryn-Yr-Hesglwyn, presented a Saler 48 to 72 month old 803kg cow making £1092.08 (136ppkg). Steers under 48 months topped at £1123.91 (167ppkg) for a 673kg Charolais Steer from G P Pugh & Son, The Garth.

From Monday 29th February TB Tested Otm cows will be sold at 9 am in Ring 2, to be unloaded in bays 19 – 24. Followed by non-TB Tested cows in Ring 1, to be unloaded in bays 25 – 28.

PLEASE DO NOT UNLOAD IN WRONG BAYS.

PRIME HOGGETS (3529)

An entry of 3529 prime hoggets selling to an average of 189.89ppkg

Super Lights (18) to 168ppkg from DR Hodnett, Wernygyfron. Others to 163pplg from R G Bebb & Co, Caermynach. Average of 163.39ppkg.

Lights (366) to 188ppkg from N E Jones, The Gaer & JG Ellis & Son, Tynewydd. Others to 184ppkg from J G Ellis & Son, Tynewydd. Average of 174.64ppkg.

Standards (496) to 209ppkg from TEA Owen, Hollybush. Others to 205ppkg from C & M Higgs, Little Bank. Average of 187.48ppkg.

Mediums (1264) to 250ppkg from G James & Son, Penybank. Others to 230ppkg from H M Powell & Son, Whitehouse. Average of 193.58ppkg.

Heavies (1112) to 207ppkg from J A Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm. Others to 201ppkg from J C Evans & Co, Belannewydd. Average of 190.40ppkg.

Over Weights (232) to 209ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Others to 199ppkg from J C Evans & Co, Belannewydd. Average of 172.28ppkg.

It is advised that Hoggets are belly clipped.

CULL SHEEP (1426)

An entry of 1337 ewes averaging £61.34 up £2 on last week. Ewes topped at £138 for three ewes from S J Smith, Penybryn. M W Hamer, 3 Corricks Rise, presented a ewe making £125. 75 Rams forward averaging £81.17. Rams topped at £140 from C Tomlinson, Agden Dairy Farm.

J & K Higgs, Cwmfron, presented two rams making £122. Overall trade was stronger on bigger ewes, an excellent trade was seen on rams due to reduced supply.

CULL EWE VENDORS: Please ensure all cull sheep are correctly identified when offered for sale at the market.

STORE LAMBS

Another good entry for the time of year of just under 200 store lambs. Top call of the day went to a pen of Suffolk x mixed/clean lambs from H P & M Lloyd, Cilfachau realising £70 with further Suffolk x lambs from the same home selling to £66.50.

T K Robinson, Tynewydd sold Mule tup lambs to £69 with G W Jones, Henfryn selling Mule wether lambs to £59.50 and a pen of 41 Texel x mixed/clean lambs from P R Price & Son, Llanshay Farm to £57.50.

An entry of 121 cade lambs met with an average of £6.68 topping at £20.

Store lambs to commence again from 10.30am next Monday followed by couples and Cade lambs.

COUPLES

An entry of 50 couples this week with trade topping at £165 for 3 Texel x full mouth ewes with twin Texel x lambs at foot from J O Evans, Parc y Pwll. Further entries from Mr Evans realised £160 for a 3 year old Texel x ewe with twin lambs and £155 for as found Texel x ewes with twins at foot. Also from the same home was a number of ewes with single lambs at foot which topped at £124.

A Lleyn yearling with a charollais x lamb at foot sold for £115 from R Jones, Tanyfridd. Mr Jones also presented a lleyn 4 year old ewe with twin charollais lambs at foot selling for £142. Mules from J B C Gwilliam, Bwlch Garth, sold to £95 for an As found single and £128 for 16 as found mules with twin lambs at foot. Further entries invited.

The sale of couples next week will commence following the sale of store lambs.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 16 cows and calves forward this week selling to a top of £2500 for a 2011 born British Blue cow with her Limousin x Heifer calf from M J Bower, Footbridge. Also from the same home was a 2012 born British Blue cow with her Limousin bull calf making £2350, and another similar outfit making £2320. J W Jones & Partners, Pantglas Isa, presented a Limousin x 6th calver with her British Blue x heifer calf making £1800.

Also from M J Bower was a pedigree 2014 born Limousin bull ‘Wilodge Jescot’ making £4100.
