Welshpool Livestock Sales report from a lively day’s auction at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (25)

An increased entry of 25 Otms selling to an overall average of 108.06ppkg. Otm cows topped at £1021.20 (120ppkg) from G I Francis & Co, The Bryn, for a Limousin cow weighing 851kg.

Cows 48-72 months topped at £841.23 (117ppkg) for a 719kg Freisian cow from G F Griffiths, Ashcroft.

Steers under 48 months topped at £1137.60 (158ppkg) for a Limousin weighing 720kg from E Gethin & Co, Tycoch.

Otm Cows averaged 103.15ppkg / £686.05.

Ows 48-72 months averaged 104.91 / £664.89.

Heifers under 48 months averaged 130ppkg / £690.30.

Steers under 48 months averaged 144.30ppkg / £1098.12.

From Monday 29th February TB Tested Otm cows will be sold at 9 am in Ring 2, to be unloaded in bays 19 – 24. Followed by non-TB Tested cows in Ring 1, to be unloaded in bays 25 – 28.

PLEASE DO NOT UNLOAD IN WRONG BAYS.

PRIME CATTLE 
Two Limousin prime heifers forward from S M Rowlands, Dolwen, weighing 470kg and 640kg making 242ppkg and 240ppkg respectively.

A similar entry of 3804 prime hoggets selling to an average of 177.37ppkg

Super Lights (3) to 146ppkg from R Roberts, Pennant. Average of 146ppkg.

Lights (33) to 184ppkg from TD Jones & Co, The Bryn. Others to 181ppkg from J G Ellis & Son, Tynewydd. Average of 171.43 ppkg.

Standards (310) to 200ppkg from MRM Matthews, Tanyfron. Others to 196ppkg from J G Ellis & Son, Tynewydd. Average of 181.75ppkg.

Mediums (1587) to 233ppkg from M P B Ashton, Belan Ddu. Others to 221ppkg from FG & G Mountford, Middle Heldre. Average of 176.75ppkg.

Heavies (1188) to 246ppkg from T G Davies, Home Farm. Others to 232ppkg from JR & RM & JP Andrew, Bronheulog. Average of 169.38ppkg.

Over Weights (518) to 211ppkg from M P B Ashton, Belan Ddu. Others to 209ppkg from FG & G Mountford, Middle Heldre. Average of 154.11ppkg.

It is advised that Hoggets are belly clipped.

PRIME LAMBS (544)

An entry of 544 prime lambs selling to an average of 236.67ppkg.

Super Lights (6) to 240ppkg from JM& IM Lewis, Erwbarf. Average of 240ppkg.

Lights (25) to 267ppkg from EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands. Others to 253ppkg from JI & JE Williams, Llwynybrain. Average of 245.54ppkg.

Standards (340) to 313ppkg from DJ & MY Evans, Tandderi. Others to 307pkg from EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands. Average of 236ppkg.

Mediums (162) to 286ppkg from J Corfield & Sons, Fairfield. Others to 280ppkg from EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands. Average of 236.95ppkg.

Heavies (10) to 241ppkg from NC & AGM Davies, Penysir. Others to 226ppkg from ED & ER Davies, Marton Hall. Average of 215.77ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2222)

A larger entry of cull sheep this week seeing averages of £55 for ewes and £68.44 for rams.  Ewes topped at £130 for two ewes presented by GP & D Jones, Clawdd Coch. Rams topped at £125 from RT & MSC Jones, Rhydfaes.

CADE LAMBS

An entry of 119 cade lambs selling to a top of £25 from A Groe, Coedtalog. Overall average of £6.

COUPLES

The better weather brought with it a slightly increased entry of 281 couples including 45 Hoggs and lambs. Trade topped at £300 for a cracking Texel Yearling with a single Texel lamb from David, Roberts Glancamlas, who also presented a three year old Texel with a Single Texel lamb which realised £270. EW Howells & Son, Oakwood, sold 6 Texel yearlings with single Charollais x lambs to £180. DE & KD Langford, Brunant, sold 2 Suffolk yearlings with twin lambs to £182 and a Suffolk x yearling with a single lamb to £108. The small entry of hogs sold to £167 from M Davies, Caerafon, for 4 Texel hogs with single Texel lambs. Also from the same home were 3 Mule hogs with Single lambs to £162.

Top prices for twins were:

£182 – 2 Suffolk x yearling with Texel x lambs, DE & KD Langford, Brunant.

£180 – 5 Texel yearlings with Charollais x lambs, E W Howells & Son, Oakwood.

£168 – 1 Suffolk x yearling with Texel x lambs, DE & KD Langford, Brunant.

£167 – 5 Suffolk x full mouth with Charollais x lambs, E W Howells & Son, Oakwood.

£166 – 14 Texel x 3 year olds with Texel x lambs, W A Morris, Ceunant.

Top prices for Singles were:

£300 – Texel yearling with Texel lamb, D Roberts, Glancamlas.

£270 – Texel 3 year old with Texel lamb, D Roberts, Glancamlas.

£190 – 6 Texel yearling with Charollais x lambs, E W Howells, Oakwood.

£167 – 4 Texel yearlings with Charollais x lambs, M Davies, Caerafon.

£162 – 3 Mule Hoggs with Texel x lambs, M Davies, Caerafon.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 18 cows and calves met with a top price of £1540 for a Limousin cow with her British Blue x male calf from FM & SJ Jones, Caebardd Farm. HA & RA Davies, Genauhafod, presented a Blonde D’Aquitaine cow with her Charolais bull calf making £1520. F J Owens, Llettygynfach, presented a Blonde cow with her Blonde Male calf to £1470. VAS & SM Corbett, The Gorther, presented a Limousin cow with her Charolais x heifer calf making £1420. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £1400-£1600 4 lots, £1200 - £1400 11 lots, £1000 -£1200 1 lots, <£1000 3 lots.
