Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a lively auction at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday for sheep and Tuesday for cattle.
OTMS (25)
An entry of 25 Otm cows this week selling to an overall average of 121.87ppkg.
Topping the otm section was E Jones & Son, Penbontpren, with a Limousin cow weighing 894kg making £1251.60. WG & DE Woosnam, Upper Gwestydd, presented a British Blue cow weighing 819kg making £1146.60. Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £932.40 for a Welsh Black from E Pryce Jones & Son, Clegyrnant. JGH Griffiths, Bettws Hill, presented a British Blue weighing in at 675kg making £1005.75.
Otm Cows averaged 119.67ppkg/£806.70
Cows 48-72 months averaged 123.89ppkg/£826.37
Heifers under 48 months averaged 130ppkg/ £782.53
Bulls under 72 months average 115ppkg/£1185.65
From Monday 29th February TB Tested Otm cows will be sold at 9 am in Ring 2, to be unloaded in bays 19 – 24. Followed by non-TB Tested cows in Ring 1, to be unloaded in bays 25 – 28.

CULL SHEEP (2001)
An entry of 1907 ewes which was a slightly reduced entry on last week. Ewes averaged £57 (+£2 on last week) Demand was strong for well muscled ewes topping at £128 from N Oughton, Lymore Farm for a pen of 11 Charollais ewes. An entry of 69 cull rams averaging £81 (+£13 on last week) 3 Texel rams achieved £159 from D C Jerman, Ty Gwellt. Overall a mixed trade was seen throughout the sale.
COUPLES
A Superb entry of 394 couples was met with a buoyant trade selling to a top of £228 for a Texel Yearling with Twin Texel Lambs from Davies Roberts, Glancamlas.
E W Howells & Son, Oakwood, again presented a tremendous consignment of ewes and lambs selling to £192 for 5 Suffolk x yearlings with twin Charollais lambs and £179 for a Suffolk x full mouth ewe with Twin Charollais Lambs.
WA Morris, Ceunant, sold 11 Texel x 3 year old ewes with 22 Texel x lambs to £181. JBC Gwilliam, Bwlch Garth, sold 5 Suffolk x yearlings with twin Texel x lambs to £170 and 5 Mule yearling ewes with Single Texel x lambs to £150.
A small entry of 28 hoggs and lambs sold to £123 for a Scotch Mule with 2 Chamoise x lambs from D & D Morgan, Alltcoch, and £118 for 2 Texel x hogs with single Texel x lambs friom DE & KD Langford, Brunant.

STORE CATTLE
The end of April store cattle fair saw 1089 cattle sold through ring two.
There was an excellent complement of buyers forward which competed well for the cattle on offer, even if they were a bit more cautious in their bidding which was not surprising given the recent drop in the fat price. With buyers in attendance from Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Herefordshire, North Wales and local customers, demand was never the less brisk with Bullocks returning an average of £927.20 and 211.05ppkg and heifers 205.54ppkg and £856.86.
