Welshpool Livestock Sales report on busy cattle and sheep auctions on Monday and Tuesday at Buttington Cross

OTMS (34)

A bigger show of otm cattle, with high demand from the 10 buyers around the ring. Top price was for a 951kg British Blue otm cow from B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli, making £1968.57 (207ppkg). Partneriaeth R E Jones,Maesllymysten, presented a Simmental 49 month old cow weighing 646kg making £988.38 (153ppkg). Steers 48 to 72 months topped at £978.28 (148ppkg) for a 661kg Limousin from Evans Bros, Tynewydd.

OTM Cows averaged 125.82ppkg / £844.16

Cows 48 – 72 months averaged 130.54ppkg/ £829.82

Heifers under 48 months averaged 134ppkg / £775.86

Steers 48-72 months averaged 148ppkg/£978.28

Mediums (900) to 284ppkg from DW & SM Roberts, The White House. Others to 280ppkg from J A Williams, Llecwedd-Ddyrys. Average of 228.66ppkg.

Heavies (32) to 255ppkg & 232ppkg from H G Ellis & Co, Tynywern. Others to 228ppkg from D P Casewell, Tanrhiw. Average of 213.55ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2001)

A good show of cull sheep on Monday resulting in averages of £65.95 for ewes and £91 for the 87 rams on offer. Top price in the ewes was £128 for two ewes from D T A Williams, Upper Bolbro. CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm, presented 4 ewes making £120. Rams topped at £136 from L E Brymer-Griffiths.

COUPLES

A bumper entry of just under 500 hoggs with their lambs at foot. An impressive number of quality sheep on offer. A credit to the vendors.

Trade was slightly easier than the previous week. A strong Mule Hogg and Lamb presented by R G Francis & Son, Craignant sold to the days top price realising £190. D H Morgan, Nantgwynne sold Beltex x Texel Hoggs with single lambs at foot to £184 with Texel x Hoggs and lambs at foot from B J & M Davies, Gorse Farm selling to £182. J A V Mills & Sons, Llanerchllwyd sold Welsh Mule Hoggs and lambs to £176 while M J & J Price, Penycrug sold Welsh Mule hoggs with Texel lambs at foot to £170. Generally, Hoggs and lambs were trading from £140 to £170.

Another good entry of couples this week with an increased entry of Welsh ewes available. Top call of the day went to M J & J Price, Penycrug for a Welsh Mule yearling ewe with twin lambs at foot selling to £202. Full mouth Suffolk ewes with twin lambs at foot from J A V Mills & Son, Llanerchllwyd sold to £148 while P & C Marsh, Glyn Farm presented As Found Mule ewes with twin lambs at foot to £136. Improved Welsh ewes with twin lambs at foot from E J Evans, Penygraig sold to £121. A & C Jones, Groespluan Farm presented a pen of Welsh Mule yearling ewes with twin lambs at foot to £160 with further ewes from this home with single lambs at foot selling to £144.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 25 cows and calves met with a top of £2400 for a Limousin x 1st calver with her Limousin bull calf from DP & RE Evans, Moel-Y-Garth Farm. Also for the same home was another Limousin x 1st calver with her Limousin heifer calf making £2180. M J Bower, Footbridge Farm, sold 10 outfits selling to a top of £2220 for a British Blue x 2011 born cow with her Limousin x heifer calf. A pure 2010 born Limousin cow with her Limousin heifer calf from the same home sold for £2120. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000 + 4 lots, £1800-£2000 5 lots, £1600-£1800 5 lots, £1400- £1600 4 lots, £1200- £1400 6 lots, <£1000 1 lot.

STORE CATTLE

An entry of 698 store cattle, including 150 Organic cattle, sold to averages of 208.20ppkg or £862.61 for steers and heifers averaged 199.26ppkg/£793.28.
