Welshpool Livestock Sales report on an auction at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (45)

An increased entry of 45 Otm cattle this week selling to an overall average of 124.67ppkg. Otm cows topped at £1079.40 (140ppkg) for a 771kg Limousin from MD Bufton & JD Pryce, Cefn Y Berrin. M Jones, Rhydarwydd, presented a Hereford cow weighing 733kg making £952.90 (130ppkg). B Evans & Co, Upper Cwmydalfa, presented a 34 month old Limousin heifer weighing 587kg making £1038.99 (177ppkg).

OTM Cows averaged 118.03ppkg / £768.20

Cows 48 – 72 months averaged 122.03ppkg / £763.76

Heifers under 48 months averaged 142.60ppkg / £807.57

Steers under 48 months averaged 115.07ppkg / £861.85

Overall average of 124.67ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (2079)

An entry of 2079 prime lambs selling to an average of 189.63ppkg.

Lights (113) to 215ppkg from JG & SO Lewis, Tremafon. Others to 210ppkg from Jones & Evans, Rhosyrhiw. Average of 201.54ppkg.

Standards (565) to 242ppkg from D Gethin, Llanyhared Others to 238pkg from MG & MN Hanselman, Knapps Farm. Average of 190.10ppkg.

Mediums (1346) to 226ppkg from H G Ellis & Co, Tynywern. Others to 224ppkg from A S Hopley, Kingsleigh.  Average of 188.71ppkg.

Heavies (49) to 220ppkg from DL & JE Lewis, Dolymelinau. Others to 205ppkg from D P Casewell, Tanrhiw. Average of 187.30ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (2595)

An entry of 2595 prime hoggets selling to an average of 162.59ppkg

Super Light (24) to 150ppkg from E L Evans & Co, Green Farm. Average of 125.97ppkg.

Lights (123) to 175ppkg from M J Davies, Yr Hafon . Others to 172ppkg from F D Grosvenor & Co, Cross Farm. Average of 154.94ppkg.

Standards (317) to 174ppkg from M & H Owens, Glantre. Others to 170ppkg from D & S Jones, Brynglas Bach. Average of 154.20ppkg.

Mediums (669) to 189ppkg from P & P Hughes, Hargreaves Farm. Others to 182ppkg. Average of 166.95ppkg.

Heavies (807) to 181ppkg from P & P Hughes, Hargreaves Farm . Others to 180ppkg from R & EJ Bowker, Rhysnant . Average of 167.12ppkg.

Over Weights (256) to 169ppkg from P & P Hughes, Hargreaves Farm. Others to 160ppkg from MPB Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu. Average of 145.28ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2094)

An entry of 1958 cull ewes averaged £60.23 (-£7.00 on last week). Ewes topped at £110 presented by E & H Chapman, Morfodion. M & H Owens, Glantre, presented two ewes also making £110. An entry of 82 Rams met with an  average of £73.35 (+£1 on last week). Topping the section was T R Pinches, Lords Hill, with two rams making £132.

COUPLES

A pleasing entry of 400 couples selling to a brisk trade.  A strong run of ewes from Mr F Bailey, Pensarn sold to a top of £192 for Texel x ewes with twin lambs at foot.  Other ewes with twin lambs at foot from this home sold to £185 and £186.  Ewes with single lambs at foot were generally trading at £35 - £60 per life depending on strength with ewes with twins selling from £30 - £50 per life.

Another good entry of just under 400 Hoggs with their lambs at foot with some strong sheep on offer.  Purchasers can buy with confidence to buy a proven breeding ewe ready to go.

Top price of the day went to A P Davies, Blaenglyn for White Faced Mules with Texel lambs at foot selling to £178.  Texel x Hoggs with lambs at from H C Davies, Ty Canol sold to £170, Texel x Hoggs with single lambs at foot from J G Jones, Cefnbrith sold to £165 and Welsh Mule Hoggs with Texel lambs at foot sold to £162 from J V Davies & Co, Garth Fawr.  Generally, Hoggs and lambs were trading from £130 - £165.

An anticipated entry of 400 couples followed immediately by 400 Hoggs with their lambs at foot next Monday at 11am.Vendors should also note we will be holding another prize sale of couples on 30th May 2016.For further information please contact the Mart Office on 01938 553438.

COWS & CALVES

There were some excellent outfits in the cows and calves this week with one of the best overall shows through and through for some time, thankyou vendors.  Leading the was at £2820 was CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall with a Limousin 1st calver with a Limousin heifer calf at foot.  From the same home a Limousin 2nd calver with a heifer calf which made £2420.

Presented by D P Evans, Moelygarth, were 7 Limousin x 1st calvers and 2 Hereford x 1st calvers all with cracking Limousin calves at foot which sold to a top of £2550 for a Red Lim x cow with a Bull calf at foot. Other leading prices from D P Evans were £2250, £2180, £2120. Overall the 9 outfits averaged £2163.33. The on-going herd dispersal from M J Bower, Footbridge, Tasley, saw another 9 go under the hammer selling to a top of £2300 for a 2011 Limousin cow with a Limousin calf at foot.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2500 + 2 lots, £2200 -£2500 4 lots, £2000 - £2200 9 lots, £1800 - £2000 4 lots, £1500 - £1800 14 lots, £1200 - £1500 7 lots, £1000 - £1200 3 lots & <£1000 4 lots.
