Welshpool Livestock Sales report on busy sale at Buttington Cross on Monday, and it is brought to you by our sponsor Dennis Shingler & Sons.


OTMS (21)

An entry of 21 Otm cattle this week, selling to a top of £1072.80 (144ppkg) for a 745kg British Blue Cow from G I Francis & Co, The Bryn. L G Lewis, The Farm, presented a Limousin cow weighing 720kg making £950.40 (132ppkg). Cows 48 to 72 months reached £1125.74 (154ppkg) for a 731kg Simmental Cow from Partneriaeth R E Jones, Maesllymysten.

OTM Cows (x12) averaged 114.75ppkg / £709.74

Cows 48 to 72 months (x9) averaged 132.18ppkg / £826.27

Overall average of 122.27ppkg


PRIME LAMBS (4454)

An entry of 4454 prime lambs sold to an average of 194.06ppkg.

Super Lights (8) to 195ppkg from C J Orme, The Fields. Average of 195ppkg.

Lights (506) to 192ppkg from JR & ME Roberts, Penarddlas. Others to 191ppkg from E P Jones & Son, Nan-Y-Nodyn. Average of 181.81ppkg.

Standards (896) to 218ppkg from DW & SM Roberts, The White House & B Davies, Brynpicca. Others to 216ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Average of 189.80ppkg

Mediums (2207) to 238ppkg from D Gethin, Llanyhared. Others to 227ppkg from B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli. Average of  197.48ppkg.

Heavies (710) to 210ppkg from EE Powell & Son, Cil Pentre. Others to 209ppkg from E W Jones, Cesail-Y-Bryn. Average of 193.55ppkg.

Over Weights (99) to 197ppk from A E Casewell, Bodynfoel. Others to 195ppkg from D P Casewell, Tanrhiw. Average of 183.38ppkg.


CULL SHEEP (3742)

This week we saw another large entry of 3742 ewes, which achieved a strong overall average of £57. Demand was strong on quality ewes reaching a top price of £125 for a pen of 19 Texel ewes from Messrs JS & A Howells, Shadog Farm, Pentre Cwrt. Also an entry from G E Davies & Son, Cwmbromley, of 11 ewes achieving £118. A small entry of 31 rams forward selling to an average of £75, with the best quality reaching well in excess of £100. Two rams from J W Hopkins, Bank Farm, made £138.

Overall demand was strong for all types of ewe.


STORE LAMBS

A much improved entry of 467 store lambs this week selling to an overall average of £56.  Strong Texel x tup lambs from A Evans, Groton Farm sold to £65 while a pen of 20 Charollais x mixed/clean lambs from J Stanley, Rorrington sold to £63 and 30 Lleyn tup lambs from E & D Jones, Lluestwen sold to £60.  Texel x tup lambs from EM & DR Jones, Pwllcoch sold to £61 while T Hallett, Upper Stapeley Farm sold Cheviot wethers to £60.50.  Texel x mixed/clean lambs from A G Roberts, Abernodwydd to £60, Suffolk x mixed/clean lambs from JT & GH Jones, Talerddig Farm sold to £60 with tup lambs from the same home to £62.

Generally, longer term lambs ranging from £48 - £54 with medium to short term lambs with good growth potential selling from £54 - £60.

BREEDING EWES

An entry of 117 breeding ewes was again met with a strong trade, topping at £152 for a pen of 10 strong stretchy Suffolk x yearlings from RF & DJ Price, Pentrenant Farm, who also sold a further pen of the same ewes for £149. A H Jones & Son, Hirrhyd, sold a pen of 20 Suffolk x yearlings for £130. DE & KD Langford, Brunant, sold 2 pens of 10 Suffolk x yearlings for £120 and £121 respectively. DWP Griffiths, Park Lodge, sold 4 Texel x yearlings for £121.

Usual weekly sale of breeding ewes will commence next week at approximately 11 am, following the sale of Store Lambs.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 12 cows and calves met with a top price of £2350 for a 2011 born Pedigree Limousin cow with a Limousin Bull calf from Mrs A Roberts, Glanrafon. Next at £1680 was a British Blue x cow with a Salers Bull calf from CJ & HM Evans, Lower Chatwall Farm, a similar outfit from the same home made £1500. RJM Shearer, Tynreithin Hall, presented a British Blue 2nd calver with a Limousin x heifer calf making £1520. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000 + 1 lot, £1600 - £2000 1 lot, £1200 - £1600 4 lots, £1000 - £1200 3 lots, < £1000 1 lot.
