Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a seasonal show of stock at Buttington Cross on Monday. Our report is brought to you by Dennis Shingler & Sons.


OTMS (30)

An entry of 30 Otm cattle this week selling to a top of £1087.70 for a 730kg Limousin cow from SH Lloyd & Son, Manor Farm. Also from the same home was a 62month old Limousin cow weighing 644kg making £978.88. A Charolias Under 48 month old heifer from R E Astley, Rhosgomorog, weighed 617kg making £962.52.

OTM Cows (x19) averaged 119ppkg / £763.04

Cows 48 to 72 months (x7) averaged 116.89ppkg / £662.41

Heifers Under 48 months (x4) averaged 136.02ppkg / £754.91

Overall average of 120.60ppkg


PRIME LAMBS (4520)

A large entry of 4520 prime lambs sold to an average of 180.45ppkg.

Lights (347) to 179ppkg from D Morris, Tycoch. Others to 175ppkg from Ieuan Davies & Sons, Llwynygrug. Average of 165.88ppkg.

Standards (816) to 245.0ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp . Others to 222ppkg from G Jones, Hirrhyd. Average of 174.90ppkg

Mediums (2075) to 262ppkg & 249ppkg from E Ifans, Pencelyn. Others to 226ppkg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Average of  184.01ppkg.

Heavies (1032) to 229ppkg & 224ppkg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 208ppkg from A Rees & Son, Tynllwyn. Average of 182.95ppkg.

Over Weights (184) to 196ppk & 188ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maesmochnant Uchaf. Others to 186pkg from D P Casewell, Tanrhiw. Average of 173.50ppkg.


CULL SHEEP (3304)

An entry of 3247 cull ewes averaged £45.72. Ewes topped at £100 from M H Pugh, Gilfach and JS & A Howells, Shadog Farm. C R Hughes, Maesteg, presented a good pen of 15 ewes making £90. Topping the ram section was E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-yr-Ychain with a ram at £127 and £121. Rams averaged £58.07. Overall demand was strong but averages down of previous weeks.


STORE LAMBS (1286)

A strong entry of 1286 store lambs this week topping at £70 for a Texel tup lamb from S Evans, Calcot Manor, and 6 Mule tup lambs from F R Williams, Cefncanol, also made £70. Wether lambs topped at £67 for 10 Lleyn lambs from H J Marsh & Sons, Stokesay Castle Farm. Mixed and Clean lambs topped at £64.50 for 10 Mule lambs from W Meredith, Maesteg. F R Williams, Cefncanol, presented 13 Suffolk x ewe lambs making £63.

Theave Lambs (134) averaged £51.17

Mixed and Clean lambs (246) averaged £55.22

Wether lambs (119) averaged £54.56

Tup Lambs (671) averaged £51.49

Mixed and Tup Lambs (76) averaged £56.69

Theave and Tup Lambs (40) averaged £46.56

 

BREEDING EWES (1189)

A fantastic entry of 1189 including late entries for our bank holiday catalogued sale that was kindly sponsored by Greencoat Farm, with prizes being awarded for the highest price pen of 10 of more Yearling ewes and 10 or more Aged ewes.

The prize for the yearling ewes went to J I Evans, Belan Yr Argau, for 12 cracking Texel x ewes, whilst R D Bowen, Glanrhyd, took the prize for the aged ewes with 10 Stretchy Blue Faced Leicester x Texel 2 year old ewes that sold for £150.

Other yearling ewes hit £155 for 6 blocky Texel from H Hughes , Hendy and £152 for 12 coloured mules from RG & JL Peate, Cwmderw. Suffolk x yearling ewes topped at £150 for a pen of 18 from JG & SO Lewis, Ty Issa. Two year old ewes peaked at £124 for 12 Suffolk x from A Rees & Son, Tynllwyn, with a further 12 from the same home selling to £122.

8 Mule 3 year old ewes from G Price, Hafod, sold to £110 with a further 7 from the same home making £108.

Full mouth ewes topped at £158 for a pure bred Texel from ST Jones, Arllan Fawr, with a pen of 11 Texel x from the same home hitting £110. 10 Mules from JGH Griffiths, Bettws Hill, sold to £104.

A small entry of 12 Mule Ewe Lambs from A M Jones, Middle Farm, sold to £82.

Yearling ewes (767) averaged £123

2 Year old ewes (77) averaged £110

3 Year old ewes (82) averaged £96

Full mouth ewes (190) averaged £90

As found ewes (61) averaged £82

Ewe Lambs (12) averaged £82.

Regular sales of Breeding Ewes continue next week with the sale to commence following the sale of Store Lambs.
