Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (31)

A good entry of Otm cows this week topping at £1091.85 (145ppkg) for a Simmental weighing 753kg from J & B Vaughan, Sychtyn. IE & M Gittins & Sons, Lower Ucheldre, presented a 818kg British Blue Otm making £1047.04 (128ppkg).Cows 48 to 72 months topped ta £1130.49 (159ppkg) for a 711kg Limousin from G & H Jerman, Tynyrwtra. Also from the same home was a 794kg Simmental making £1087.78 (137ppkg). Heifers under 48 months topped at £1331.32 for a Limousin weighing 802kg  from E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain. HG & IW Rees, Faidre Fach, sold a 551kg Limousin heifer making £1013.84 (184ppkg).

Otm Cows (x18) averaged 120.99ppkg / £815.46.

Cows 48 to 72 months (x9) averaged 131.02ppkg / £924.83.

Heifers under 48 months (x4) averaged 150.44ppkg / £940.24.

Overall average of 127.53ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

PRIME HOGGETS (4095)

An entry of 4095 prime lambs sold to an average of 172.30ppkg.

Super Lights (78) to 158ppkg from Jones Bros, Rhiwaedog. Average of 144.40ppkg.

Lights (286) to 187ppkg from C R Ellis, Ty Uchaf. Others to 183ppkg from J E Owen & Co, Gilfach. Average of 157.84ppkg.

Standards (828) to 200ppkg from A A Colucci, Great Cloddiau. Others to 196ppkg from CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Average of 168.55ppkg.

Mediums (1308) to  260ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm. Others to 251ppkg from J T Jones, Tynewydd. Average of 176.47ppkg

Heavies (969) to 230ppkg from Llanllwyda Cyf, Llanfihangel Y Pennant. Others to 226ppkg from J F Morgan & Son, Cae Garreg. Average of  165.32ppkg   

Over Weights (569) to 209ppkg from G James & Sons, Penybank. Others to 201ppkg from S & FS Jones, Llanwen.  Average of 150.13ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1637)

A good entry of cull sheep this week seeing averages of £47.18 for ewes and £67.26 for rams. Topping the cull ewe section were 4 ewes from S J Smith, Penybryn, making £117. T K Robinson, Tynewydd, presented 3 ewes making £116.50.Rams topped at £122 from D Roberts, Broomfiled. V Hallett, Seven Stars, presented 2 rams making £119.50.

STORE LAMBS (284)

An entry of 284 store lambs met with a top price of £65 for texel x theave lambs from RG & KA Lewis, Hockleton. Mixed and clean lambs topped at £61 for texel x lambs from S & FS Jones, Llanwen.

Averages for the day were as follows:

Theave Lambs (33) averaged £49.24 topping at £65.

Mixed and clean lambs (167) averaged £52.28 topping at £61.

Wether lambs (7) averaged £49.50 topping at £49.50.

Tup lambs (77) averaged £46.32 topping at £58.

Cade Lambs -  An entry of 95 cade lambs averaged £10, topping at £16 from J D Jones, Croggin-Iddon.

COUPLES

A reduced entry of 58 ewes with their lambs sold to a complete clearance, with Mr Alan Morris, Maestanyglwyden, taking top price of £173 for an as found Texel x ewe with twin lambs at foot. This final entry of couples completed Mr Morris’ ongoing flock dispersal and we wish him all the best for the future.

DTM Jones, presented 2 Texel x 2 and 3 year old ewes with twin lambs that sold for £168, and a part of an ongoing reduction Mr Jones presented further pens of older ewes with twins that hit £140 and £133 respectively. Geraint Jones, Cefn Brith, sold 2 pens of Texel x ewes with twins for £142 and £132.

Again trade proved sticky at times with the majority of ewes on offer being either full mouth or as found. The majority of twins traded between £120 and £140.

The best singles hit £118 from R E Jones, Gelli, for a 4 year old Texel x ewes with Suffolk x lambs from the same home also sold  a Welsh 2 year old with a single lambs for £112.

Majority of ewes with single lambs traded between £70 and £90.

Catalogue sale of couples next Monday to commence at 11.30am.

STORE CATTLE

We ended up with an entry of 108 store cattle at the mid march sale. Averages for the day were 217.38ppkg or £885.16 per head for steers, and heifers averaged 203.36ppkg or £774.24 per head.
