Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (60)

A larger show of otm cattle this week with trade remaining very similar, topping the otm section was CV & EM Lewis , Buttington New Hall, with a 774kg Limousin making £1385.46 (179ppkg). J T Lewis & Co, Dolfor Hall, sold a 761kg Limousin otm making £1263.26 (166ppkg). Otm bulls topped at £1306.25 (125ppkg) for a 1045kg Angus from JV Davies & Co, Garth Fawr.  Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1554.20 (190ppkg)  for a Limousin weighing 818kg also from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £1208.68 (164ppkg) for a Hereford Heifer from WI Jones & Sons, Cilcwm Fawr.

Section round-up

Otm Cows (x41) averaged 118.57ppkg / £769.01.

Cows 48 – 72 months (x6) averaged 141.09ppkg / £946.95.

Heifers Under 48 months (x10) averaged 144.03ppkg / £780.49.

Otm Bull (x2) averaged 121.96ppkg / £1290.37.

Bulls under 72 months (x1) averaged 176ppkg / £1636.80.

Overall average of 125.97ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (4768)

An entry of 4768 prime lambs met with an average of 164.05ppkg.

Lights (368) to 178ppkg & 174ppkg from R A Jones, Red Gwenthrew. Others to 165ppkg from ERG Huxley, Rhosydd Gwynion. Average of 145.50ppkg.

Standards (1183) to 192pkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Others to 187ppkg from DR Owen & Son, Sandilands. Average of  156.27ppkg.

Mediums (2058) to 229ppkg  from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Others to 223ppkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Average of  170.28ppkg.

Heavies (838) to 232ppkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Others to 207ppkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Average of 168.25ppkg.

Over Weights (218) to 170ppkg from PA Lloyd & TS Wierzbinski, Cartref. Others to 169ppkg from WK Davies, Offas Way. Average of 156.82ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2100)

An entry of 2002 cull ewes achieved an average of £44.67 this week (+£8.40 on last week). Strong ewes were again very much in demand, ewes peaked at £120 from S J Smith, Penybryn. Also quality entry from G, M & A Jones, Cefndre, made £110. The middle of the range ewes were more in demand compared to last week. A strong entry of Rams were present achieving an average of £54 with many welsh throughout the consignment. Rams peaked at £150 for a strong ram presented by P & CE Davies, The crest.

Overall trade was much sharper throughout all types of killing sheep.

STORE LAMBS (957)

A strong entry of 957 store lambs this week selling to an  average of £45.55. The top prices went to  DA & SJ Jones, Dyffryn, Aberhafesp with £67.00 for texel tup lambs and Gittins & Co, Giants Bank, Abermule with £60.50 for Beltex mixed/clean lambs. T M Davies, Wynnstay Farm, Llanbrynmair presented  theave lambs lambs topping £55.00.  Wether lambs topped £51.00 from K A Jones, Penrhiw, Little London.

Averages for the day were:

Theave Lambs (154): £41.26

Mixed/clean lambs (358): £50.47

Tup lambs (338): £42.62

BREEDING EWES

Another pleasing entry of 825 breeding ewes and ewe lambs forward that provided something for everyone. Top price of the day £140 went to EM Morgan, Frongreen, for 3 coloured welsh mule yearlings. 15 Texel ewes from A J Potter, Grove House Farm. Hot £124 and 12 welsh mules from D Wierzbinski, Argae Fields, sold for £110.

Most yearling ewes on offer were hardier hill sorts and sold between £80- £100.

A small entry of 2 year old ewes on offer from Messrs Richards, Red House, hit £88 twice, firstly for a pen of 10 Suffolk x and then for Texel x . Messrs Richards also topped the 3 year olds and Full mouth sections at £68, £70 again for Suffolk x ewes.

The sale, as expected, was dominated by ewe lambs with the best hitting £87 for 25 Texels from RA & E Davies, Ffinnant.

Improved welsh ewe lambs from JE Lewis & Son, The Garn, sold to £85 twice from Pens of 20. Mule ewe lambs peaked at £74 from D & M Cooke, Coppice Farm, with further lots from the same home hitting £68 and £58.
Averages of the day:

Yearling ewes averaged £87,

2 Year Old ewes averaged £88,

3 year old ewes averaged £47,

Full mouth ewes averaged £59,

Ewe lambs averaged £66.

BREEDING RAMS

A catalogued sale of Texels this Monday saw a top of 620gns for a 2 year old Texel ram from WP Ashton, Higher Penley Farm. Yearling rams topped at 600gns from SP & CP Williams, Great Woolascott, from the same home was another yearling making 580gns.  M & S Jones, Lower Forrest, sold a yearling ram to 500gns, and Messrs Jones also topped the ram lamb section at 320gns. Next at 300gns was a ram lamb from RM & G Hughes, Ty Canol.

Averages of the day were:  Yearling Rams: £350.77 and ram lambs £242.45.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 80 cows and calves met with a sound trade with buyers slightly more cautious but never the less all outfits were converted and changed home. An entry of 55 cows and calves from Messrs Owen, Pengraigwen and Geirn Farm, Anglesey, met with a solid trade for the Limousin and British Blue x 1st calvers with Limousin calves at foot with the majority been back in calf to a Limousin bull. Leading the consignment at £2780 was a British Blue heifer with a Limousin bull calf and following close behind was a similar outfit which made £2550. With 16 outfits over £2000, the remainder were mainly from £1700 - £2000.

Presented by Guto Lewis, Sychlyn, Pool Quay, were 14 Limousin cows with calves plus a magnificent British Blue x 2nd calver with a Limousin bull calf which made £2750. The Lims sold to a top of £2200 twice to average £2026.

From RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall, were 3 Limousin x 1st calvers with limousin calves at foot sold for £2200, £2000 and £1980. A British Blue x 1st calver with a Limousin bull calf presented by TG Davies, Home Farm, sold for £1700.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows:£2500 + 3 lots, £2200 - £2500 3 lots, £2000 - £2200 20 lots, £1800 - £2000 28 lots, £1600 - £1800 16 lots, £1400 - £1600 3 lots, < £1400 4 lots.
