Welshpool Livestock Sales report on Sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (39)

A smaller entry of otm cattle this week saw a top of £1159.02 (137ppkg) for a 846kg British Blue otm cow from AA Colucci, Great Cloddiau. H G & I W Rees, Faidre Fach, presented a 713kg Limousin otm cow making £1083.76 (152ppkg). Younger cows topped at £1500.52 (161ppkg) for a Limousin weighing in at 932kg from JE & DW Rogers, Red House. EM Tilsley & Son, Llandinier, presented a 712kg Limousin heifer making £1068 (150ppkg).

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x25) 116.83ppkg / £771.53.

Cows 48-72 months (x8) 137.62ppkg / £954.38.

Heifers Under 48 months (x2) 144.27ppkg / £982.50.

Steers Under 48 months (x2) 132.46ppkg/ £786.16.

Bulls Under 72 months (x2) 123.89ppkg / £1298.38.

Overall Average 126.39ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (3431)

An entry of 3431 prime hogget’s sold to an overall average of 184.30ppkg.

Lights (395) to 194ppkg from J P Breeze & Son, Fronladys. Others to 179ppkg from C J Davies & Son, Waengwyn. Average of 148.96ppkg.

Standards (807) to 234ppkg from JM Lewis, Pentwyn. Others to 216ppkg from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Average of 177.80ppkg.

Mediums (1465) to 248ppkg & 232ppkg from J A Gwalchmai, 5 Minffordd. Others to 227ppkg from  R A Davies, Llwynderw. Average of 193.98ppkg

Heavies (541) to 236ppkg  & 214ppk from CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Others to 207ppkg from J A Gwlachmai, 5 Minffordd. Average of 184.66ppkg   

Over Weights (125) to 186ppkg from S P Roberts, Wenallt. Others to 168ppkg from G T Price, Upper Penrhyddlan. Average of 165ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1664)

An entry of 1563 cull ewes averaged £49.54 (+£6 on previous week). Ewes topped at £126 presented by CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. R A Davies, LLwynderw, sold a ewe to £119. Ewes of good fleshing were in demand throughout the sale, well fleshed mule ewes achieving around £70.

An entry of 87 cull rams achieved an average of £71.43. topping at £124 from AA Colucci, Great Cloddiau.

STORE LAMBS

A reduced entry of 673 store lambs this week selling to a good trade with the best sorts still well in excess of £60, and selling to  an overall average of £53.51. Top price went to RG & JL Peate, Cwmderw, Cyfronydd with £75.00 for Suffolk x tup lambs. Theave lambs and wether lambs both topped £72.00 with the texel x theave lambs coming from M H Pugh, Gilfach, Kerry and  texel x wether lambs from DA & SJ Jones, Dyffryn, Aberhafesp. D M Jones, Geseilfa Ucahf, Llawryglyn presented texel x mixed and clean lambs which topped £67.50.

Averages for the day were:

Mixed/Clean Lambs (202): £51.48

Theave Lambs (72): £52.30

Tup lambs (361): £55.42

Wether Lambs (38): £51.42

IN-LAMB EWES

The first catalogued store sheep of 2018 saw 195 in-lamb ewes selling to a some what mixed trade with buyers approaching cautiously due to the bad weather recently received.

Yearling ewes hit £165 for 2 beltex x texels carrying a twin and a single in-lamb to a blue texel from D Lewis, Pentwyn, with others from the same home reaching £160 and £158. 2 and 3 year old Pedigree Blue Faced Leicesters from G P Williams, Bryndansi, scanned carrying a twin and a triplet to a Pedigree Blue Faced ram hit £150. Full mouth and as found Texel x ewes from G E Tomley, Top House Farm, scanned carrying triplets to a texel ram also hit £150 and £145.

Averages for the day:

Yearling Ewes £134, 2 year olds £100, 3 year olds £150, 4 year old/ full mouth £87 and As found averaged £90.

Next catalogued sale of in-lamb ewes and couples is Monday 5th February – entries to be in by Monday 29th January.

COWS & CALVES

A small entry of just 5 cows and calves sold to a top of £2280 for a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin bull calf from DJL & SJ Evans, Rhoscyninfa. Also from the same home was a Limousin x 2nd calver with a Limousin heifer calf which made £1980. G Hughes & Son, Pertheirin, sold a Britih Blue x 1st calver with a Limousin x heifer calf which made £1680. E Price, Troedrhiwcastell, sold a British Blue x 2nd calver with a Bazadaise x male calf sold to £1620. T S  Morgan, Glanhafon Fach, sold a British Blue x 1st calver with a Lim x Heifer calf made £1200.
