Welshpool Livestock Sales report on Sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (16)

A small entry of just 16 otm cattle this week sold to a top of £1125.90 (162ppkg) for a 695kg Limousin from J E Edwards, Cefnbraich. A Rowlands, Penygelli, presented a 765kg Welshblack making £1055.70 (138ppkg). Younger cows topped at £1008 (144ppkg)  for a British Blue weighing 700kg from TT Jones & Co, Brynaire Uchaf.  Steers under 48 months topped at £877.11 (173ppkg) for a 507kg Limousin from J Pryce, The Smithy.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x7) 124.83ppkg / £742.95.

Cows 48-72 months (x4) 127.44ppkg / £767.53.

Heifers Under 48 months (x2) 136.10ppkg / £686.60.

Steers Under 48 months (x3) 152.03ppkg / £848.82.

Overall Average 124.83ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (4134)

An entry of 4134 prime hogget’s sold to an improved overall average of 197.20ppkg.

Lights (443) to 197ppkg from Arwyn Groe, Coedtalog. Others to 194ppkg from DW & LE Morgan, Lower House. Average of 157.41ppkg.

Standards (911) to 233ppkg from IE Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant. Others to 227ppkg from JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen Farm. Average of 193.67ppkg.

Mediums (1428) to 279ppkg from J A Gwalchmai, 5 Minffordd. Others to 234ppkg from M P Harding, Lower Cefnypwll. Average of 207.31ppkg

Heavies (1080) to 225ppkg  from EL Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 217ppkg from MPB Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu. Average of 203.43ppkg   

Over Weights (165) to 200ppkg from MPB Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu. Others to 200ppkg from Jones Bros, Rhiwaedog. Average of 185.05ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2136)

An entry of 2001 cull ewes achieved an average of £45.81, this was -£6  on last week but this week show was slightly poorer than previous.  Ewes peaked at £116 from M & H Owens, Glantre. JM & JG Shearer, Cochsidan, presented a ewe making £107. CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm, sold ewes to £104. A large entry of 104 cull rams averaged £ 65.79 topping at £112 from R A George, Penybank.  Overall ewe carrying good fleshing were very much in demand.

STORE LAMBS

A seasonal entry of 720 store lambs on offer, displaying a large variance in quality Sold to a top of £77 for 6 Texel x mixed and clen lambs from CJ Newey, Mount Pleasant. Tup lambs hit £74 for 10 Texel x ram lambs from M Payne, Old Smithy.  Theave lambs peaked at £70 for 20 beltex x from DB & EFJ Gethin, Dolyrheol. Wether lambs hit £59 for 2 Texel x from PA Lloyd & TS Weirzbinski, Cartref.

Averages for the day (which included a large entry of Welsh and hill bred lambs) were:

Mixed/Clean Lambs : £45.22

Theave Lambs : £48.90

Tup lambs : £48.88

Wether Lambs : £32.36

Overall average : £46.21.

IN-LAMB EWES

An entry of 254 in-lamb ewes sold to a slightly improved trade and an ally full of cautious purchasers.

Leading the way were 7 Texel x 4 year old and full mouth ewes carrying triplets from D S Jones & Co, Fronheulog. Yearlings sold to £133 for 5 Suffolk x yearlings carrying twins from EW Davies, Brynawel.

Averages of the day were:

Yearlings £101,  2 year olds £97, 3 year olds £103 and 4yr old/ Full mouth £88.

COUPLES

A small entry of couples sold to a roaring trade with singles peaking at £160 for a Charollais 3 year old ewe with a single lamb, with a 3 year old Suffolk with a single lamb selling to £138 from Jackie Payne, Plas Trehelig.

MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden, brought the first of their annual consignment selling 2 Texel x full mouth/ as found ewes with single lambs to £145 and full mouth Texel x ewes with twins to £181 and £176. More of the same entered next week.
