Welshpool Livestock Sales report on Sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (42)

a good show of otm cattle this week sold to a top of £1487.40 (148ppkg) for a 1005kg Friesian cow from J HH Jerman & Co, Wernddu. JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen Farm, presented a 750kg Limousin making £1290 (172ppkg). A Welshblack otm cow from W D Morris & Son, Green fields, weighed in at 808kg making £1123.19 (139ppkg). Cows 48 – 72 months topped at £1802.50 (175ppkg) for a Charolais  weighing 1030kg.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x26)  132.44ppkg / £872.67.

Cows 48-72 months (x10) 138.29ppkg / £859.17.

Heifers Under 48 months (x5) 142.98ppkg / £794.42.

Bull under 72 months (x1) 176ppkg / £968.

Overall Average 135.70ppkg.

An entry of 4270 prime hogget’s sold to an overall average of  243.47ppkg.

Mediums (1358) to 335ppkg & 315ppkg from JR, RM & JP Andrew, Bronheulog. Others to 304ppkg J A Wood & Sons, Kinnerton . Average of 258.09ppkg

An entry of  1657 spring lambs sold to an overall average of 311.79ppkg.

Standards (564) to 388ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf & J A Williams, Llechwedd-Ddyrys. Others to 383ppkg from  E L Andrew, Trewen Cottage.  Average of 31.98ppkg.

Mediums (921) to 376ppkg from DJ & MY Evans, Tandderi. Others to 375ppkg from RD & GM Evans, Yew Tree Villa. Average of  308.25ppkg.

Heavies (95) to 326ppkg from L Harding, Swn-y-Gwynt. Others to 321ppkg from TH Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Average of 289.41ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2736)

A big show of culls this week saw averages of £67.81 for ewes and rams averaged £87.  topping the cull ewes section at £127 was a pen of 11 from D Evans & Co, Manor Farm. J & J Beavan & Sons, Winsbury, presented a pen of 12 ewes making £126.50. rams topped at £164 from E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain.  D Evans & Co, Manor Farm, sold a ram to £150.

COUPLES

A good entry of 550 couples broke down as 149 older ewes and 401 hoggs with lambs again sold to a sharp trade. R P Thomas, Troed Y Gaer, sold 5 Texel yearlings and 2 year old ewes with single lambs to £200. As found suffolk x with twins hit £180 from JM & IM Lewis, Erwbarfe. As found Charollais x with twins hit £175 from M J Williams, Pontyperson. As found welsh ewes with singles sold to £102 from A Evans, Brynperffaith, with twins from the same home reaching £132. Full mouth Suffolk x full mouth ewes with singles hit £148 from M J Williams, Pontyperson with others to £138 and £133.Te best hoggs also sold to a terific trade with Texel x hoggs from R I Owen, Cwmfynnon, selling to £212. BJ & MY Davies, Gorse Farm, sold Texel hoggs for £210, £192 and £185. Price & Price, Cwmearl, sold Texel hoggs for £192 and £188.

I C Goodwin & Son, Lower Esgair, sold texel hoggs to £198, £170 & £180. Best coloured mules hit £188 from E & SM Hughes, High Park farm. £185 was reached for 20 from C E Samuel, Lower Ystrad.  JV Davies & Co, Garth Fawr, sold  a pen of 6 to £183 and a further 24 coloured mule hoggs for £180. majority of hoggs traded between £140 and £160 with the best quality trading between £170 and £190.

4 – 5 Texel x yearling/ 2 year olds with singles £200 from R P Thomas, Troedygaer.

5 – 10 Texel x hoggs with singles £198 from I C Goodwin & Son, Lower Esgair.

6 – 1 texel x hogg with a single £195  from E W Howells & Son, Oakwood.

7 – 10 Texel x hoggs with singes£195  from BJ & MY Davies, Gorse Farm.

8 – 2 Mules with singles £192 E W Howells & Son, Oakwood.

9 – 10 Texel x hoggs with singles £192 Price & Price, Cwmearl.

10- 6 Texel x hoggs with singles £190 E W Howells & Son, Oakwood.

Another catalogued sale of 500 couples next Monday sale at 11am.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 30 cows and calves met with a sound trade and with the sun shining demand is slowly increasing. Three Limousin x 1st calvers with Limousin calves  at foot from DP & RE Evans, Moel-y-Garth, sold for £2150, £2380 and £2000. D Roberts, Rolly Farm, Knockin, sold 4 British Blue x 1st calvers with Limousin calves at foot (2 heifers, 2 Bulls) from £1780 to £2220  to average £1980.

F J Owens & Co, Llettygynfach, sold 2 Blonde x cows with Blonde heifer calves for £1770 and £1720.

 A breakdown of prices achieved were as follows: £3000 + 5lots, £2500-£3000 4lots, £2200 - £2500 2 lots, £2000 + 5 lots, £1800 - £2000 1 lots, £1600 - £1800 4 lots, £1400 - £1600 1 lot, £1200 - £1400 6 lots, £1000 - £1200 8 lots, <£1000 5 lots.
