Welshpool Livestock Sales report on their weekly Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (39)

an entry of 39 otm cattle this week saw a top of £1342.35 (171ppkg) for a 785kg Limousin from C J Davies & Sons, Amblecote Farm.  A 725kg Limousin from TH & GM Watkins & Son, Cefnllwyd, made £1181.75 (163ppkg).

Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1018.40 (134ppkg) for a 760kg Limousin from RG & EM & PG Roberts, Tymawr. EO & VJ Roberts, Cefn Coed Isaf, presented a 645kg British Blue making £941.70 (146ppkg). Heifers under 48 months topped at £950.30 (170ppkg) for a 559kg Lim from C Carter, Moelwylim.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x27)  138.56ppkg / £912.93.

Cows 48-72 months (x6) 132.71ppkg / £836.49.

Heifers Under 48 months (x5) 158.82ppkg / £848.44.

Bull under 72 months (x1) 156ppkg / £1230.84

Overall Average 140.39ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (1647)

An entry of 1647 prime hogget’s sold to an overall average of 191.42ppkg.

Lights (187) to 194ppkg & 190 ppkg from JR & ME Roberts, Penarddlas.  Others to 189ppkg from I R Williams, Coed Y Gweddill. Average of 180.74ppkg.

Standards (378) to 219ppkg & 215ppkg from M C Davies, Lower Brynelen. Others to 203ppkg from FG & G Mountford, Middle Farm. Average of 187.05ppkg.

Mediums (401) to 226ppkg from DE & KB Owen & Son, Rhallt Isaf. Others to 217ppkg M & H Owens, Glantre. Average of 198.43ppkg

Heavies (285) to 237ppkg & 229ppkg  from M P B Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu. Others to 216ppkg from T Gittins, Sweet Meadow. Average of 206.82ppkg   

Over Weights (75) to 210ppkg from E Jones & Son, Goitre. Others to 207ppkg from J A Jandrell, Llettyderyn.   Average of 183.48ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (1425)

An entry of 1425 spring lambs sold to an overall average of 276.13ppkg.

Lights (127) to 274ppkg from  T Evans, Pendre. Others to 271ppkg from T M Davies, Wynnstay Farm. Average of  264.06ppkg.

Standards (457) to 344ppkg from MG & MN Hanselman, Knapps Farm. Others to 331ppkg from Bowen & Bowen, Penthryn.  Average of 271.68ppkg.

Mediums (751) to 400ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant. Others to 388ppkg from H G Ellis & Co, Tynywern. Average of  280.04ppkg.

Heavies (75) to 276ppkg from R G Francis & Son, Craignant. Others to 274ppkg from T C Evans, Bryncyrch. Average of 267.52ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2200)

A slightly reduced entry of 2200 culls this week saw averages of £60.94 for ewes and rams averaged £80.52. smaller ewes were in demand with welsh ewes reaching the £50 markish. Ewes peaked at £124 for two ewes from G A Radmore, Timberth. M & H Owens, Glantre, sold a ewe to £122. Well meated rams were in demand peaking at £138 from GA Radmore, Timberth. COUPLES

The second prize sale of couples produced an entry of 765 outfits which included a large consignment of 489 hoggs and lambs. The prizes, sponsored by the british wool and judged by Mr J Roberts, Fynnondu, for 10 hoggs or more proved a challenging decision with the results as follows:

1st – 10 Suffolk x hoggs 10 lambs from I C Goodwin & Son, Lower Esgair, selling for £210.

2nd – 10 Texel x hoggs 10 lambs from H C Davies, Ty Canol, selling for £220.

3rd – 10 Texel x hoggs 10 lambs from E Mills & Son, Esgair, selling for £205.

other highlights within the hoggs and lambs saw prices hit £215 for a further 10 texels from H C Davies, Tycanol. £202 for texels from J Lewis & Son, Penfynnon. Charollais x hoggs and lambs peaked at £198 from H C Davies, Tycanol. Further Suffolk x hoggs to £190, £188 from F Bailey, Pensarn. The best mule hoggs peaked at £182 from F Bailey, Pensarn. With others to £180 from J V Davies & Co, Garth Fawr. All hoggs presented averaged £155 per couple.

Highlights from the older ewes saw a run of 7 texel 2 year old ewes from AE & CA Jones, Groespluan farm, hit £110 for singles and £250 for twins, averaging £89/ life.

J M Lewis, Pentwyn, sold Rouge and Beltex x 3year old and yearlings with twins to £232 and £228.

F Bailey, Pensarn, sold 8 mule 2 year olds with twins to £225. Suffolk 2 year olds with twins to £220 and suffolk 2 year old singles to £172.

overall average £143.21 per outfit or £68.50 / life.

COWS & CALVES

Dare I say it, but I think that was the best show of cows and calves shown on a Monday in Welshpool that I have ever had with some absolutely fantastic outfits forward. There was competitive bidding throughout which resulted in an average of £2160 for 93 cows and calves forward which included the good, the bad and the ugly!!!

topping the sale at £3600 was a pedigree Limousin cow and calf from G S Mathias, Tynywern, who also sold outfits at £3400 (2) and £3250.

Ryan Morris, Maestanyglwyden, sold 20 1st cavers with Limousin calves at foot which peaked at £3500 for a Limousin x 1st calver with her Limousin bull calf at foot. AT £3300 was a British Blue x Limousin heifer with her Limousin x bull calf at foot.  Other leading prices for Ryan were £2820, £2750 (2), £2650. Overall the 20 outfits averaged £2324.

From Guto Lewis, Sychlyn, Pool Quay, were 16 Limousin x 1st calvers with either British Blue or Limousin x calves at foot. Topping his consignment was a British Blue x Limousin 1st calver with a Limousin heifer calf which sold for £3350. At £2920 was a Limousin cow with her bull calf. Other leading prices were £2780, £2680, £2650, £2600. The 16 outfits averaged £2442.50.

Presented by DP & RE Evans, Moelygarth, were 9 Limousin x 1st calvers with Limousin calves at foot which sold to a top of £2480 for a Limousin x 1st calver with a Bull Calf. At £2320 was a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin heifer calf. A Hereford x 1st calver with a Limousin x heifer calf sold at £2200. Overall Messrs Evans' averaged £2135.

From JE & JT Evans & Son, Upper Cefn Penarth, were 11 black Limousin x 1st calvers with Limousin calves at foot which sold to a top of £2580 with others at £2500, £2450, £2400 and £2380. overall they averaged £2380.

RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall, sold a Limousin x 1st calver with her Limousin bull calf at £2420. Next was a similar outfit at £2320. Overall the 6 entered from Boycott averaged £2195.

other leading prices on the day were £3120 for a British  Blue x Limousin 1st calver with a Limousin x heifer calf presented by M J Williams, Pontyperson.  G A Thomas, Penllain, Adfa, sold a British Blue x 2nd calver with a Charolais heifer calf at foot for £2300.

on the day 55 outfits sold for £2000 and over.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £3000 + 8 lots, £2800 - £3000 3 lots, £2500 - £2800 12 lots, £2200 - £2500 25 lots, £2000 - £2200 7 lots, £1800 - £2000 13 lots, £1500 - £1800 12 lots, £1200 - £1500 10 lots, <£1200 3 lots.
