Welshpool Livestock Sales report on their sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (27)

An entry of 16 OTMS this week saw a top of £1245.05 (185ppkg) for a Limousin OTM weighing in at 673kg from IL & AJ Powell, Lower Cwmydalfa. JC & E Jones, Hafod, also had top price of 155ppkg for a 710kg Limousin OTM making £1201.25. Younger cows (48-72months) topped at £1113(178ppkg) for 610kg Limousin from HG Rees LTD, Hiriaeth. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1101.75 (195ppkg) for a 565kg Limousin from VE Lewis & Son, The Garn.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (16) 128.12ppkg / £832.92.

Cows 48-72 months (8) 148.22ppkg / £989.20.

Heifers Under 48 months (2) 130.95ppkg / £703.88.

Overall Average 135.83ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (4199)

An entry of 4199 spring lambs sold to an overall average of 184.82ppkg.

Lights (942) to 221ppkg from Ellis Lloyd & Co, Garthiaen. Others to  203ppkg from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Average of 178.24ppkg.

Standards (2359) to 216ppkg  from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage and also from Ellis Lloyd & Co, Garthiaen.  Average of 188.47ppkg.

Mediums (540) to 206ppkg from DR Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Others to 198ppkg from JT Lewis & Co, Dolfor Hall. Average of 186.27ppkg.

Heavies (38) to 181ppkg from F W Humphreys, Brook House Farm. Others to 171ppkg from E & SM Hughes, High Park Farm. Average of 170.37ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (3709)

An entry of 3651 cull ewes were present today, archieving an average of £47.95. This was down £8 on the previous week but there were many ewes in their wool present today that were much harder to sell. We strongly recommend to shear all cull ewes as premiums of as much as £20 can be achieved. Ewes peaked at £136 presented by CE Pryce, Yr Helyg, closely followed by DJ Lloyd & Co, Cefnbarrach and Davies Bros, Trefere Uchaf that sold ewes at £130. Rams topped at £125 from RE Evans & Son, Dinnant. Overall trade was much steadier, ewes needed to be well fleshed to reach the £70 plus mark.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 47 cows and calves this week selling to a top of £2300 for a British Blue 1st Calver with a Limousin heifer calf from JM Carruthers, Mynydd Uchaf.

JE & JT Evans & Son, Upper Cefn Penarth, presented 3 Heifers and calves selling to a top of £1810 for Limousin x 1st calver with British Blue calf. Also £1700 twice for Limousin x 1st calvers with  Limousin calves. Overall the 3 outfits averaged £1736.

RLG Edwards, Trewylan Dairy presented 5 cows and 6 calves selling to a top of £1760 for Limousin Cow with Charolais bull calf. Next at £1620 was a Welsh Black cow and Charolais twin calves.

A consignment of 8 outfits from CMA Botwood, Gwrid, topping £1360 for a British Blue cow and Limousin bull calf. Next at £1270 was a Aberdeen Angus Cow with Limousin bull calf.

£2000+ 1 lot, £1800 - £2000 2 lots, £1600 - £1800 9 lots, £1400 - £1600 10 lots, £1200 - £1400 4 lots, £1000 - £1200 11 lots, <£1000 6 lots.
