Welshpool Livestock Sales reports on its Monday sale at Buttington Cross

OTMS (12)

A smaller entry of 12 OTMs this week saw a top price of £1219.50 (150ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 813kg from D M Jones, Geseilfa Uchaf. DT & ME & ML Jones, Gelli Farm reached 166ppkg for a 678kg Limousin x OTM making £1125.48. Younger cows (48-72months) topped a £1423.80 (180ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 791kg from M Davies, Caerafon. M Davies also had another top price of 176ppkg for a 793kg Limousin x making £1395.68.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (5) 130.17ppkg / £920.53.

Cows 48-72 Months (7) 145.37ppkg / £956.13.

Overall Average ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3407)

A smaller entry of prime lambs sold to an overall average of 182.16ppkg.

Lights (960) to 206ppkg from M Davies, Caerafon. Others to 205ppkg also from M Davies, Caerafon. Average of 181.08ppkg.

Standards (1596) to 211ppkg from D O Gethin, Pencoed. Others to 207ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf.  Average of 184.64ppkg.

Mediums (561) to 199ppkg from R A Davies, llanwt Isaf. Others to 198ppkg from D D & M J Evans, Pantywynthrew. Average of 181ppkg.

Heavies (35) to 186ppkg from E W Jones, Cesail Y Bryn. Others to 181ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Average of 168.21ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1704)

A smaller entry of 1675 ewes achieved an average of £41. This was down £3 on last weeks trade. A large entry of unfleshed ewes was reflected in todays average. Ewes peaked a £121, presented by J A Williams, Llechwedd-ddyrys. Closely followed by ewes presented by Delves & Co, Craven Centre, with ewes achieving £118. As ususal Red House Farm, Aberhafesppresented an excellent run of ewes making £113.

Overall well fleshed ewes sold well, whilst ewes of poor fleshing sold well, whilst ewes of poor fleshing were hard work.

BREEDING EWES (1300)

A fantastic entry of 1300 breeding ewes for our 1st prize sale of yearlings which was Kindly Sponsored by The Agricultural Mortgage Corporation (AMC) and judged by Mr Huw Owen, Red House Farm.

The pre sale judging results are as follows:

1st place Texels: 10 Texel x yearlings from R M Evans, New House selling for £185

1st place Suffolks: 10 Suffolk x yearlings from G Morgan, Cae Garreg selling for £142.

1st place Mules: 14 Mule yearlings from P R Evans & Son, Fachwen selling for £140.

Other highlights sold were Beltex yearlings from L R Morgan, Ty Gwyn Farm hit £230 and averaged £210 for the 8 lives forward.

Beltex x Texel yearling from D Lewis, Pentwyr sold for £179.

2 and 3 year old Texel ewes from C Jones, Bedol hit £122 twice with others to £110.

Full mouth ewes from W K Davies, Offas Way sold a run of full mouth ewes on part of a flock dispersal to £118, £108 x2 and £105.

Best as found ewes hit £92 for 9 Suffolks from R E & E J Rowlands with Texels from the same home selling for £82.

2 Year Olds - £100

3 Year Olds - £93

Full Mouth - £81

Sale of Catalogued Breeding Ewes to commence at 11.30am each week, Catologues available from the Market Office

STORE LAMBS

A similar entry to last week with prices peaking at £70 for a mule whether from S Lane, New Hall.

Mixed and clean lambs hit £67 for a pen of 27 Charollais x from E J Emerson, Cwm Colebatch with others to £54 for 33 Texel x from WT, GO & AE Davies, Ty Gwyn Farm.

Ram lambs peaked at £66 for a Texel from S Lane, New Hall with others to £66 from again for the same home.

Ewe lambs reached £62.50 for Suffolks from P & R Owen, Tirbrwnt with others from F R Williams, Cefn Canol which sold to £54.50.
