Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a busy Monday at Buttington Cross.

OTMS (15)

A smaller number of OTM cattle on offer sold again to a strong competitive trade throughout for all grades and weights of cattle to return an overall average of nearly 136.74ppkg. Today’s top prices were 153ppkg and £1612.40 per head, for a Limousin bull weighing 1112kg with plenty of others over 140ppkg.  With a shortage of well fleshed cows, trade hopefully will remain good.

This week saw a top price of £1102.50 (150ppkg) for a Blonde d'Aquitaine x OTM weighing in at 735kg from AG & G Rowlands, Tynpant. D W Davies, Penybank reached 148ppkg for a 740kg Limousin x OTM making £1095.20. Bulls reached £1612.40 (145ppkg) for a Limousin weighing 1112kg from DP & MA Jones, Poulton Farm House. Younger cows (48-72months) topped a £765.81 (127ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 603kg from PL Harrison, Neuaddlwyd. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1048.50 (150ppkg) for a British Blue x heifer weighing 699kg from DP & MA Jones, Poulton Farm House. JES Corfield, Woodgate Farm reached 153ppkg for a 625kg British Blue x heifer making £956.25.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (8) 133.19ppkg / £837.29.

Bulls (2) 145ppkg / £1612.40.

Cows 48-72 Months (2) 127ppkg / £765.81.

Heifers Under 48 months (2) 151.42ppkg / £1002.38.

Overall Average 136.74ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3412)

A slightly smaller number of lambs forward sold to a improved trade throughout at price levels 3 to 4 pence per kilo up on last Monday. This resulted in an overall average of 171.3ppkg. Again well meated lambs of any weight, were in most demand with any leaner types being more difficult to sell. Best trade for the well-shaped, well fleshed export weight lambs.

Lights (186) to 173ppkg from LB Owen, Garth Vaughan. Others to 166ppkg from Ellis Lloyd & Co, Garthiaen. Average of 161.63ppkg.

Standards (683) to 200ppkg from L B Owen, Garth Vaughan. Others to 197ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Average of 169.70ppkg.

Mediums (1691) to 196ppkg from C J Davies & Son, Waengwyn. Others to 194ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp.  Average of 172.61ppkg.

Heavies (709) to 192ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Also from the same home to 189ppkg. Average of 166.27ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2720)

An entry of 2720 culls achieved an overall average of £42.48. This was very similar to last week’s average. However trade was back despite a similar average achieved. Alot of unflehsed Mule and Welsh type ewes  were ranging from the £20-£30 mark. Highlights of the day were from Ballyaglonney Ltd selling ewes to £128, travelling all the way from the Isle of Man to reap the rewards of a strong trade on well fleshed ewes. Geddes & Co of Chirbury presented a pen of outstanding ewes, selling to £118. COWS AND CALVES

Leading the way in the cow and calf section this week were E W Jones & Sons, Moat Farm with a British Blue x Cow with a heifer calf at foot which made £1520. Presented by I P Jones, Ddolfawr was a British Blue x Cow with a Limousin heifer calf which made £1440. From the same home were 3 Limousin x 1st calvers with 2 Limousin bull calves and 1 heifer calf which sold for £1380 (2) and £1370. At £1300 was a Blonde d'Aquitaine x Cow with a Blonde d'Aquitaine bull calf from F J Owens & Co, Lletygynfach. An Aberdeen Angus x Cow with a Charolais steer calf at foot from M J Jones, Dolebolion made £1210. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows:

£1500 + 1 Lot, £1300 - £1500 6 Lots, £1200 - £1300 5 Lots, £1100 - 1200 4 Lots, £1000 - £1100 1 Lot, <£1000 1 Lot.

BREEDING EWES

An increased entry of over 2000 ewes sold to a much harder trade with sheep on offer realising less money than in recent weeks.

Texel x yearlings peaked at £165 from M & JE Jones and DCE & MW Davies, Cwm Farm, with others to £165 and £160 from the same home.

Suffolks x yearlings realised £152 from retiring farmer PF Davies, Lower Penarron.

An increased entry of Mule yearlings sold to a buoyant trade with the best on offer hitting £152 for 16 coloured Mules from P Davies, Lawnt.

Large entry of smaller plainer yearlings proved hardwork realising £80-£100.

Another large entry of flock aged ewes peaked at £118 for 2 year old Texels from retiring vendor PF Davies, Lower Penarron with others from the same home hitting £100 twice.

Small entry of ewe lambs peaked at £67 for 12 Mules from JLL Morgans & Sons, Ty Mawr

STORE LAMBS

Increased entry if 400 Store lambs again selling to a good trade hitting a top price of £65.50.

Ewe lambs peaked at £59.50 for 5 Texels from C Davies, Foel Fach with others to £50 from D E Bennett, Cwmgwernog.

Mixed and Clean lambs reached £65 for 15 Texels from P Robinson, Upper Trefnant.

Wether lambs reached £60 for 3 Texels from Launder Farm, Gyfylchau, with others to £42.20 from I Lewis & Partners, Tynybwlch.

Ram lambs realised £65.50 for 40 Texel x from S Ifans, Tanyffordd with others to £63 for Texel x from BL Griffiths, Lower Pengelli.
