Welshpool Livestock Sales report on busy sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (63)

A larger number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1434.87 (149ppkg) for a Charolais x OTM weighing in at 963kg from Roberts & Jones, Parc. D S W Jones & L E Jones, Llwynderw reached 167ppkg for a  845kg British Blue x OTM making £1411.15. Bulls reached £1423.50 (146ppkg) for a Limousin weighing 975kg from J & K Higgs, Cwmfron . Younger cows (48-72months) topped a £960.37 (137ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 701kg from D E Wozencraft, Mynydd-Llys. D T & M E & M L Jones, Gelli Farm reached 156ppkg for a 595kg Limousin x making £928.20. Heifers under 48 months topped at £928.80 (144ppkg) for a Limousin x heifer weighing 645kg from A & L C Evans, Tynycelyn. H Jones, Coedcae reached 152ppkg for a  535kg Limousin x heifer making £813.20.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (37) 119.78ppkg / £788.74.

Bulls (2) 136.82ppkg / £1290.24.

Cows 48-72 Months (9) 112.72ppkg / £655.79.

Heifers Under 48 months (9) 101.24ppkg / £473.91.

Steers Under 48 months (6) 125.88ppkg / £698.23

Overall Average 118.17ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3389)

A slightly smaller number of lambs forward sold to an average of 170.89ppkg, selling to a similar trade to last week. With, if anything, a bigger price difference between the well meated and lean lambs on offer. Better quality, better meated lambs again sold to a strong competitive trade throughout for all weights, especially the middle range 34 – 39 kilo weights.

Leaner lambs were again more difficult to sell with the better bred of these types potenitally now being better sold as store lambs.

Lights (240) to 176ppkg from W I Jones & Sons, Cilcwm Fawr. Others to 174ppkg from P A Lloyd & T S Wierzbinski, Cartref. Average of 150.62ppkg.

Standards (837) to 192ppkg from H Hughes & Son, Hendy. Others to 191ppkg from T R Savage & Son, Glanfeinion. Average of 173.71ppkg.

Mediums (1458) to 194ppkg from B E & B E Langford, Lletymeibion. Others to 190ppkg from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands Farm.  Average of 171.74ppkg.

Heavies (677) to 188ppkg from T H Vaughan & Son, Maes Mochnant Uchaf. Others to 183ppkg from I E Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant. Average of 165.83ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2496)

An entry of 2430 ewes were forward, achieving an average of £38.92. Trade was varied throughout the sale. A good crowd of grazing men was present. A very small entry of well fleshed ewes with good shape, peaking at £101, presented by D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands Farm. L B Owen, Garth Vaughan presented some excellent ewes achieving £95.50. A shortage of well fleshed killing ewes was evident.

BREEDING EWES

An incredibly impressive entry of 4000 ewes for our Second Prize Sale of yearling ewes that was Kindly Sponsored by For Farmers and local rep Alister Davies, offering vouchers for the highest priced pens of 10 or more Texel x, Welsh Mule and Welsh Ewes.

Results:

Texel x - £145 for 10 Texel x yearlings from E R Jones, Dolagored Fach

Welsh Mules - £143 for 10 Welsh Mule yearlings from J M & A Jones, Wig

Welsh - £177 for 20 Improved Welsh yearlings from J O Evans, Llidiart Carnau

With the ring far fuller than this time last week trade proved much easier, especially early on, however purchasers were again very cautious in their bidding, choosing their lots wisely. Trade for the best quality ewes as in recent weeks has been very good, with smaller, plainer ewes proving much more difficult to sell.

Trade peaked at £210 for a pair of Texel yearlings from G P Williams & Co, Bryndansi selling others to £1901. H Jones, Glanrafon sold a run of 35 Texel yearlings peaking at £185 and averaging £155.

Jonathon Evans, Llidiart Carnau's annual consignment of 140 Improved Welsh yearlings again proved popular popular hitting £177 and averaging £143.

The best mules on offer again from another annual consignment of 100 from J M & A Jones, Wig hit £143 and averaged £138.

A small entry of Suffolk x Ewe Lambs from G H Bayliss & Son, Borfa Wen sold to £88.

STORE LAMBS

A much improved entry of over 600 store lambs following the trade of our first evening sale again sold to a boyant trade peaking at £67.50.

Ewe lambs stole the show reaching £67.50 for 15 Suffolk x from L E Brymer-Griffiths, Bryneira, with others to £59 from M Morgan, Red House.

Mixed and Clean lambs peaked at £63 for 18 Texel x from B L Griffiths, Lower Pengelli with 17 Texel x from G W Griffiths of the same stable hitting £61.50.

A small entry of 50 Welsh wether lambs sold in the run reached £27 from Rogers & Co, Glanhiran.

Tup lambs hit £66.50 for 21 Texel x from T H Davies & Sons, Clegyrddur with 12 others to £62.50 from the same home.
