Welshpool Livestock Sales report on yesterday’s sale at Buttington Cross.

OTMS (34)

A reduced number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1379.24 (ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 841kg from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall. A Limousin OTM bull weighing 988kg from RG Francis, Tyntwll reached £1215.24 (123ppkg). Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1322.88 (156ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 848kg from CV & EM Lewis, Buttington New Hall.  Heifers under 48 months topped at £776.96 (128ppkg) for a British Blue x heifer weighing 607kg from B & C Fairclough & Co, Cwmyrhiwdre. Steers Under 48 months topped at £1057.50 (150ppkg) for a British Blue x weighing 705kg from JM & C Williams, Upper Pentre.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (25) 96.01ppkg / £627.66.

OTM Bull (1) 123ppkg / £1215.24.

Cows 48-72 Months (4) 109.85ppkg / £700.03.

Heifers Under 48 months (1) 128ppkg / £776.96.

Steers Under 48 Months (2) 139.32ppkg / £884.70.

Overall Average 102.9ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (4240)

Slightly less number of lambs forward sold to an average of 168.49ppkg with a top price of 191ppkg for 43kg lambs making £82. This average would be inline with other local and national livestock market prices from late last week and today. Yet again better meated, better shaped lambs were in most demand. Heavier weight lambs were more difficult to sell as were any poorer quality and out of spec lambs. Leaner lambs were in slightly more demand as store lamb buyers buy out of this section.

Lights (241) to 184ppkg from R L Owen, Tanycoed. Others to 173ppkg from E & E Jones, Rhiwgam. Average of 152.06ppkg.

Standards (866) to 186ppkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Others to 182ppkg from B Llewellyn, Great Brithdir. Average of 164.09ppkg.

Mediums (1907) to 191ppkg from M Roberts & Co, Middle Walton. Others to 190ppkg from D R Owen & Sons, Sandilands and I E Roberts, & Son, Maesdyfnant.  Average of 171.65ppkg.

Heavies (987) to 189ppkg from GE Davies & Sons, Cwmbromley. Others to 178ppkg from 4 vendors. Average of 161.15ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2140)

A reduced entry of 2140 cull sheep were presented this week, that achieved an average of £37.21. This was a rise of £2 on the average of last week and on the whole there was less bigger ewes present this week. The rise in the average reflects the stronger trade on the heaviest ewes this week. Top price of the day was achieved by Red House Farm that sold ewes to £115 and closely followed T & B Williams, Cilmawr that sold ewes at £110. Strongest Mule ewes sold to £82 and the best Welsh up to £56.

Rams once again sold to a strong trade and averaged £68.10. Top price of the day came for a Welsh ram presented by JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen that sold for £200.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 16 Cows and Calves met with a much sharper trade than that experienced in the last 10-12 weeks, with some belter outfits on offer also contributing to an increased interest.

Leading the way at £2000 was F J Owens & Co, Llettygynfach for a Blonde d'Aquitaine x 1st calver with a Limousin x bull calf at foot. Furthermore, an April 2011 born cow with a Limousin x bull calf from the same home sold for £1450. RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall sold a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin bull calf at foot for £1800, whilst a 2nd calver from the same home with a Limousin heifer calf sold for £1450. A Limousin x 1st calver with a heifer calf from RC Davies, Rhydyfodrwydd made £1500 whilst selling at the same money was a Limousin x 1st calver with a bull calf presented by M Williams, Wern Holding. Two Hereford x 2nd calvers with Limousin x bull calves from A Roberts, Glynyrafon sold for £1260 a piece.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows:-

£1800-£2000 2 Lots, £1500-£1800 2 Lots, £1400-£1500 2 Lots, £1200-£1400 7 Lots, <£1000 3 Lots.

STORE LAMBS (1350)

A slightly smaller entry of 1350 store lambs selling to a good trade.

Tup lambs topped with Texel x from EH & DE & GO Lloyd, Pandy selling for £73.80. With other tup lambs reaching £68 from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol.

Mixed and clean lambs peaked at £68 from EJ & GM Trickey, Moat Farm with others to £66 from OME Thomas & Co, Hafod Ffraith.

Wether lambs sold to £65 for Mules from OME Thomas & Co, Hafod Ffraith and Suffolk wether lambs selling to £63.50 from H J Marsh & Sons, Stokesay Castle Farm.

Theave lambs peaked at £65.50 for Suffolk lambs from J W Owen, Penybont with Texel lambs selling for £58.50 from B E Thomas, Blaen y Cwm.

Ewe Lambs - £48.83

Mixed & Clean - £55.30

Wether lambs - £54.68

Ram lambs - £50.99

Overall average - £52.86
