Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (27)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £941.70 (129ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 730kg from A Rees & Son, Tynllwyn. P Jones & Son, Dolgwenith made 114ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 812kg making £925.68. OTM bulls topped at £1252.50 (125ppkg) for a Limousin bull from M & T Jones, Geseilfa Uchaf weighing 1002kg. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £882 (120ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 685kg from E I Edwards, Bryncelyn.  Heifers under 48 months topped at £1043.90 (143ppkg) for a Limousin x heifer weighing 730kg from JRS Hughes & Co, Lower Munllyn. A bull under 72 months weighing 616kg from DE Wozencraft, Mynydd-Llys reached £862.40 (140ppkg).

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (17) 89.57ppkg / £592.26.

OTM Bull (2) 118.57ppkg / £1175.05.

Cows 48-72 Months (2) 102.69ppkg / £831.75.

Heifers Under 48 months (3) 114.38ppkg / £697.70.

Bull Under 72 months (1) 140ppkg / £862.40.

Overall Average 98.41ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (6066)

A larger number of lambs forward sold to an average of 182.81ppkg, this was up 4ppkg on last week, with a top price of 220ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 46.5kg lambs making £94, and £105/head for 61kg Texel lambs from EL Evans & Co, The Green. Trade was very strong throughout especially considering the number of lambs forward, with yet again the better meated lambs of any weight being in most demand. Export weight lambs (39-44kg) sold to the most competitive trade with plenty of pens in this weight range selling to above 200ppkg. There was also a marked improvement for heavier weight lambs with better quality types selling between £90-£100 per head. Lighter weight 30-40kg lambs again sold to a very strong demand with a good proportion of these going back on farm as store lambs.  Trade would increase through the sale, which shows that demand is increasing and hopefully trade will continue to improve in the coming weeks, leading up to christmas and into the new year.

Lights (713) to 213ppkg from JHH Jerman & Co, Wernddu. Others to 205ppkg from PE & BM Bailey, Pantmawr. Average of 166.57ppkg.

Standards (1441) to 210ppkg from JG Rees, Pentulcae. Others to 209ppkg from IR Williams, Coed Y Gweddil and JHH Jerman & Co, Wernddu. Average of 177.76ppkg.

Mediums (2241) to 220ppkg from G & S Jones, Bryneithin and VE Lewis & Son, The Garn. Others to 218ppkg from JG Rees, Pentulcae.  Average of 189.11ppkg.

Heavies (1238) to 202ppkg from A Humphreys, Llwynmadoc Hen. Others to 194ppkg from TG Davies, Home Farm. Average of 175.77ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2701)

Today saw an entry of 2631 cull ewes and 54 cull rams. Trade was firmer throughout the sale, with Mules up to £78. Well fleshed Welsh ewes sold well with any amount over £50.

Ewes peaked at £100 presented by GP Pugh & Son, The Garth. Well fleshed continential ewes were very much in demand, quality Suffolks presented by L Harding, Swn Y Gwyn peaked at £95.

Overall a good show of cull stock was in strong demand.

STORE LAMBS (1026)

A strong entry of over a 1000 store lambs on Monday morning sold to an overall average of £55.44.

The trade saw competitive bidding with stock selling well from start to finish.

The sale was mostly dominated by Texel lambs and it could be argues that the trade was strong due to an increase in prices in the fat lamb lamb section.

Theave lambs peaked at £69, an increase from last week, from B L Hamer, Upper Brithdir. Others to £68 from L B Owen. Theave lambs averaged at £54.56.

There was a high entry of mixed and clean lambs which all sold very well with the top price going to EC Gethin, Tyn Y Waen at £72.50. Mixed and tups saw a good price of £70 for ER & CB Williams.

Wether lambs topped at £73.50 for E Jones & Son, Penbontpren with tup lambs topping the whole section at £80 for T H Turner & Co, Red House. With an average of £54.68.

The overall average for the store lamb section was £55.44 this week, an increase of £2 on last week’s overall average.

IN CALF HEIFERS AND COWS & CALVES

An entry of 65 Cows & calves and in calf heifers met with a decent trade with plenty of people around the ring.

The sale commenced with 28 quality in calf heifers and 2 second calvers from Guto Lewis, Sychlyn which were all either Limousin or British Blue x due in February, and in calf to Wilodge Goldcard or a homebred bull. Topping the trade was a British Blue x April 16 born heifer which sold to £3250. With others at £3100 and £3000. Overall the run had a tremendous trade and averaged £2523.

Presented by JR Lewis & Co, Fferem were 10 Limousin cows with Limousin x calves at foot born in May, which sold to a top of £1880, with others at £1850 and £1620. Overall they averaged £1456.

A pure Limousin 1st calver with a limousin bull calf born in October sold to £2250 for GS Mathias, Tynwern.

A Pugh, Garthbwt presented 21 in calf cows topping £1280 and averaging £813.57.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows:

£2500+ 19 lot, £2200-£2500  6 Lots, £2000-£2200 4 Lots,  £1800-£2000 3 Lots, £1600-£1800 3 Lots, £1400-£1600 1 Lots, £1200-£1400 5 Lots, £1000 -£1200 3 Lots, <£1000 21 Lots.

STORE CATTLE (100)

A good entry of 100 store cattle for the time of year met with a keen demand for the better quality cattle – despite the recent fall in the beef trade.

With the bullocks averaging 197.10ppkg and heifers 181.72ppkg. The top prices realised were:

£1175 for a British Shorthorn x bullock from JE Humphreys, Rhiewgoch. With heifers achieving £1115 for a Charolais x from TH Williams & Son, Pentre Farm.

The highest pence per kilo cattle were E Gethin & Co reaching 232.4ppkg for 11 month old Limousin x bullocks and M & GV Ellis & Son, Penllys reaching 235.3ppkg for a 20 month old Limousin x heifer.
