Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (30)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1052.23 (139ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 757kg from G Jones & Son, Yr Ogof. G & H Jerman, Tynyrwrta made 138ppkg for a British Blue x weighing 709kg making £978.42. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £875.76 (123ppkg) for a Stabiliser x weighing 712kg from G Jones & Son, Yr Ogof. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1116.45 (135ppkg) for a British Blue x heifer weighing 827kg from B & C Fairclough & Co, Cwmyrhiwdre. DM & RC Rees, Dugwm Farm also made 135ppkg for a Salers x heifer weighing 777kg making £1048.95. Bulls Under 72 months topped 114ppkg for Limousin bull weighing 820kg from G & H Jerman, Tynyrwtra making £934.80.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (20) 109.52ppkg / £738.26

Cows 48-72 Months (3) 115.30ppkg / £793.26

Heifers Under 48 months (5) 118.15ppkg / £841.68

Bulls Under 72 Months (2) 107.91ppkg/ £783.40

Overall Average 114.48ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (4112)

A larger entry of hoggets forward sold to a strong trade to return an average of 194.55ppkg, with a top price of 257ppkg for pen of 14 hoggets weighing 37.5kg hoggets making £96.50 from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol, and £103/head for 61kg hoggets from HG Ellis & Co, Tynywern.

Pleasing to see a few more forward, with trade overall being very similar to other livestock markets late last week, but slightly less than last Monday. Competitve bidding was again found on all weights and grades especially the export weight hoggs (39-44kg). Well meated and better conformation hoggs of any weight attracted keen competitve bidding throughout. Heavier weight hoggets sold to a very similar trade to last week with plenty of pens selling to £100 plus. A new buyer for lightweight (below 32kg) hoggs resulted in a very strong trade for these types. Mid weight (32-39kg) hoggs continue to be in good demand especially the better quality types.

Lights (681) to 227ppkg from JHH Jerman & Co, Wernddu. Others to 207ppkg from IW Richards, Park Farm. Average of 178.59ppkg.

Standards (954) to 257ppkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Others to 244ppkg from the same home. Average of 197.92ppkg.

Mediums (1503) to 226ppkg from SH Lloyd & Sons, Penllan. Others to 222ppkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol.  Average of 197.75ppkg.

Heavies (603) to 223ppkg from TG & EA Jones, Blaenwaen Ganol. Others to 212ppkg from Jones Bros, Rhiwaedog. Average of 183.54ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1824)

Today saw a reduced entry of 1746 cull ewes. Overall ewes averaged £52, this was up £4 on last week’s entry. Smaller ewes were in strong demand through the sale with small Welsh ewes selling well into the mid 40s. Ewes peaked at £136 presented by R Lennox & Son, Essex, travelling that extra mile to reap the reward. DC Jones, Trefaes Isaf presented ewes which achieved a premium of £130. Overall solid ewes on big and small well fleshed ewes.

An entry of 73 cull rams peaked at £90 presented by IRH Bebb, Ffridd-Cowny.

STORE LAMBS (1337)

Over 1300 entries at today’s store lamb sale, with mixed and clean lambs dominating with an entry of 500. Mixed and clean lambs peaked at £74.50 from GL & SE Lloyd, Brynhyfryd with others to £73.50 from SJ Smith, Penybryn.

The overall top price at today’s sale was for a pen of 4 tup lambs that sold at £87 from TE & EE Brown, Hafod. Others saw a good price of£85 from ER & CB Williams, Dafern for a pen of 6 Welsh tups.

There was a strong entry of theave lambs with the highest selling to £75.50 for a pen of 2 texel x from DA & SJ Jones, Dyfryn. With others to £75 from DLG Price & Co, Bryncoch.

Wether lambs topped at £71 for a pen of 16 Mules from GT Price, Upper Penrhyddlan. With other wether lambs from the same home reaching £66.

Mixed and tup lambs saw a maximum price of £60 from JG Williams, Bronllan. With others to £59 from the same home for a pen of 9 Mules.
