Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (36)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1271.20 (140ppkg) for a  Charolais OTM weighing in at 908kg from R A Owen, Tynewydd. BH Evans & Son, Rowton Grange made 135ppkg for a  Charolais x weighing 819kg making £1105.65. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1028.60 (139ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 740kg from RG & EM & PG Roberts, Ty Mawr.  DL Jones, Ddol made 131ppkg for a Aberdeen Angus x weighing 715kg making £936.65. Heifers under 48 months topped at £1130.07 (139ppkg) for a Charolais x heifer weighing 813kg from ME & GDA Davies, Monksfield Farm.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (16) 112.68ppkg / £789.59

Cows 48-72 Months (10) 117.35ppkg / £779.30

Heifers Under 48 months (10) 116.07ppkg / £731.69

Overall Average 114.85ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (2946)

A reduced entry of hoggets forward sold to a very strong trade to return an average of 200.34ppkg, with a top price of 249ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 35kg hoggets making £87 from RA Davies, Llwynderw, and £115/head for 58.5kg hoggets from H Isaac, Llwynderw.

Demand for hoggs today greatly exceeded supply with all buyers present competing for all weights and grades of hoggs. In must demand was the better quality better graded hoggs of any weight with plenty of hoggs selling to above 220ppkg. Export weight hoggs were again in strong demand as were lighter weight (32-38kg). Heavier weight hoggs found a much stronger trade than last week selling up to £115 and £114 (twice) with plenty of others over £100. With a number of vendors now coming to the end of their supply, and the feeding hoggs not quite yet ready, supply will remain short and there for hopefully prices will not reduce. All vendors are encouraged to sell their hoggs clean and dry and preferably belly clipped.

Lights (308) to 203ppkg from CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Others to 201ppkg from RGK Hodnett, Willey House. Average of 176.35ppkg.

Standards (668) to 249ppkg from RA Davies, Llwynderw. Others to 227ppkg from SH Lloyd & Sons, Penllan. Average of 197.67ppkg.

Mediums (1282) to 242ppkg from RA Davies, Llwynderw. Others to 226ppkg from H & E Powell, Llwyngwilym.  Average of 204.69ppkg.

Heavies (420) to 232ppkg from RA Llwynderw. Others to 208ppkg from HG Ellis & Co, Tynywern. Average of 189.72ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2612)

An entry of 2540 cull ewes achieved an average of £46.57. A larger proportion of smaller hill type ewes were present. Well fleshed continental ewes demanded a premium. Ewes peaked at £125 presented by DM Rowlands, Tyddyn Du. TK Robinson presented a pen of quality Texel x ewes peaking at £115. Messrs JS & A Howells reaped the reward of travelling that extra mile from South Wales selling run of Texel ewes for £110. Many Welsh type ewes reached the £60 mark. Overall a very strong on small ewes and the best continental type were selling to a premium. Overall a strong trade.

STORE LAMBS (416)

A smaller entry of 416 Store lambs present at today’s sale with some good quality stock in comparison to last week’s sale.

The sale peaked at £83 for theave lambs from E Mills & Son, Pwllyrebol. With others to £76 for Texel x from R T Watkins, Coed y Deri.

Mixed and Clean lambs saw a maximum price of £78 for a pen of 12 from RT Watkins, Coed y Deri. With others to £76 from the same home for a pen of 6 Texel x.

Wether lambs peaked at £70 for one Suffolk lamb from E Mills & Son with a Texel x lamb also reaching £70 from DC Gittins, Giants Bank.

Tup lambs reached a price of £80 for a pen of 4 Texel x from RT Watkins, Coed y Deri. With others to £75 from GW Jones, Henfryn.

Mixed and tup lambs saw a lower maximum price of £55 from C Roberts, Brynhyfryd for a pen of 4 Welsh lambs.

IN LAMB EWES

An increased entry of 220 in lambers sold to a very good trade and competitive bidding.

An entry of 48 yearling Mules from W Baker, Church Farm peaked at £146 and averaged £141.

A dispersal of Texel and Suffolk 3 year old and over ewes presented bh EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands reached £131 and averaged £103. Overall average £110/head. Large entry of In Lamb ewes next week.

COUPLES

First sale of 2019 sold to a blistering trade with prices peaking at £191 for ewes with single lambs.

Lasting the trade was DW, VM & JW Jennings, Castellan selling 4 year old Charollais x ewes with singles to £191, Texel 3 / 4 year old ewes again with singles to £190 – the consignment of 16 ewes with 16 lambs averaged £77.72 a life.

MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden presented 6 lots with Texel 4 year old ewes with singles to £170 and Texel full mouth and as found ewes with twins to £188, with the run averaging £65.74.

Overall average £70.89 a life.  More couples next week.

STORE CATTLE

An entry of 156 store cattle met with a very similar trade to a fortnight ago at the January fair. Generally the cattle were younger and smaller and on occasion were harder sold. Nevertheless with buyers in attendance from the surrounding counties trade on the best outfits was excellent which lead to the following best prices:
