Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the Sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (27)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1332 (148ppkg) for a Limousin OTM weighing in at 900kg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Red House Farm also made 150ppkg for a Limousin weighing 810kg making £1215. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1071.60 (ppkg) for a Limousin weighing 760kg from Red House Farm. Heifers under 48 months topped at £986 (136ppkg) for a Limousin heifer weighing 725kg from Red House Farm. RG & EM & PG Roberts, Ty Mawr made 120ppkg for a Limousin heifer weighing 790kg making £948.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (15) 114.96ppkg / £785.58

OTM Bull (1) 116ppkg / £1484.80

Cows 48-72 Months (7) 113.50ppkg / £741.79

Heifers Under 48 months (4) 122.97ppkg / £856.52

Overall Average 115.86ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (3098)

A slightly larger entry of hoggets forward sold to return an average of 191.37ppkg, with a top price of 248ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 42kg hoggets making £104 from SH Lloyd & Son, Penllan, and £120/head for 80kg hoggets from DN Bennett & Son, Upper Hall.

A few more hoggets forward this week after last Monday was the best trade of the week, sold to, as expected ,a reduced trade which was in line with other local and national markets. Yet again most demand was for better shaped, better meated hoggets which found strong competitive bidding throughout. Well fleshed export weight hoggets also sold to strong trade with plenty of pens selling above 200ppkg. More end of season, poorer quality types on offer today which were more difficult to sell.  Lighter weight hoggs continue to find a two tier trade with the better types selling well but the poorer bred ones proving more difficult.

Lights (177) to 217ppkg from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Others to 200ppkg from SJ Smith, Penybryn. Average of 180.11ppkg.

Standards (620) to 236ppkg from SH Lloyd & Sons, Penllan. Others to 225ppkg from JA Williams, Llechwedd Ddyrys. Average of 189.97ppkg.

Mediums (1486) to 248ppkg from SH Lloyd & Sons, Penllan. Others to 238ppkg from J Meredith, Lodge Farm.  Average of 192.82ppkg.

Heavies (583) to 214ppkg from H & E Powell, Llwyngwilym. Others to 213ppkg from RD & GM Evans, Yew Tree Villa. Average of 182.37ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1991)

An entry of 1860 cull ewes achieved an average of £46.70. A large entry of smaller ewes were forward. Small ewes sold to a premium with Welsh ewes achieving in the mid 50's. A large entry of Cheviot ewes achieved into the mid 70's. Texel ewes peaked at £111 presented by GL & SE Lloyd, Bryn Hyfryd. Long distance travellers from Essex peaked at £100. Overall small ewes were a sharp trade and in strong demand.

An entry of 106 cull rams peaked at £90.50 presented by JL Jones, & Partners, Llanrhys, with an overall average of £52.

COWS & CALVES

A seasonal entry of 5 cows and calves met with a sound trade for the entries forward.

Leading the way at £1700 was a Limousin x 2nd calver with a Limousin x bull calf at foot presented by RJ Slater & Son, The Broadlands. From the same home was a Limousin x 2nd calver with a Limousin x steer calf which sold for £1410 and a 2008 born cow with a Limousin heifer calf at foot sold at £1090.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows:

STORE LAMBS (443)

This week’s sale saw an entry of over 400 stores with mixed and clean lambs dominating. A harder trade compared to last week with less quality animals forward.

The sale peaked at £88 for two Suffolk tup lambs from CE Williams, Rhoslefain Farm. With other tups reaching £80 from RT Watkins, Coed Y Deri, and another pen at £79 for Texels from CE Williams, Rhoslefain Farm.

Wether lambs reached a maximum price of £78.50 for a pen of 7 Beltex from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch with others from the same home to £69.50 for a pen of 9 Texels.

Theave lambs made a fair price of £75 for a Texel from KE Griffiths, Hen Felin. Another pen of theaves made £70 from JE & SM Watkin & Son, Pentrego.

Mixed and clean lambs peaked at £76 from DE Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch with others to £60 twice for RT Watkins, Coed Y Deri.

Only a few lots of mixed and tups forward, topping at £59.50 for a pen of 6 Suffolk from D Morgan, Ty Newydd.

IN LAMB EWES

The only in lamb ewes on offer were presented as a flock dispersal from RC Jones & Sons, Rockley due to ill health. The 189 ewes attracted a large amount of interest with strenght and quality all the way through. All ewes were sold as 3 year olds and over, scanned in lamb to Texel rams from late March and peaked at £142 for 5 Texels with the best suffolks reaching £139 twice. The whole run averaged £126.59.

Next week sees another flock disperal of 300 Mules from Mrs A Pugh, Garthbwt. Sale starts at 11.30am.

COUPLES

An increased entry of 66 couples sold to a larger crowd of purchasers that saw prices peak at £181 for a Beltex ewe with a single lamb from J Hamer, 14 Arscott, who sold further lots to £171 and £169 with a run of 7 ewes and 7 lambs averaging £82.36/life.

Ryan Morris, Maestanyglwyden sold Texel ewes with single lambs to £158 and £150 and Texel ewes with twins to £180 and £178 with the run of 59 lifes averaging £61.73.

The majority of outfits sold between £50 and £60 a life with the poorest sorts £40 to £50 a life.

Sale of couples next week to commence following the sale of in lamb ewes at 11.30am.
