Welshpool Livestock Sales reports on its busy sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.
OTMS (15)
A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1038.08 (ppkg) for a Charolais x OTM weighing in at 811kg from JE & DW Rogers, Red House. EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands made 145ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 641kg making £929.45. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £1226.16 (156ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 786kg from Tynybryn Farms. Heifers under 48 months topped at £961.05 (149ppkg) for a Stabiliser heifer weighing 645kg from D Jones & Son.

The first entry of spring lambs sold to a decent trade and returned an overall average of 233.88ppkg. With Easter being late this year trade will improve in the next few weeks.

PRIME HOGGETS (3058)
A larger entry of hoggets forward sold to a stronger trade throughout to return an average of 204.03ppkg, which would compare favouably with other national and local livestock markets. Overall trade for all weights would be more competitive especially better quality leaner hoggs. with a top price of 242ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 35.5kg hoggets making £86 from DWP Griffiths, Park Lodge, and £107/head for 52.5kg hoggets from MPB Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu.
Pleasing to see an increase in price and more competitive bidding on the heavier weight hoggs with only the very heavy weights being more as difficult to sell. Also a noticable increase in trade for the 45-50kg hoggs espcially the leaner ones. Hopefully in the lead up to Easter trade will continue to improve.

CULL SHEEP (2144)
This week we saw an increased entry of 2387 cull ewes that sold to a terrific trade from start to finish for every type. 12 individual buyers were once again present with plenty of competition throughout. The ewes this week averaged £70 with the best Texel ewes reaching £155, Charollais to £125, Suffolk x to £121 and the best Mules up to £87.
There was a shortage of the best Welsh/Speckled ewes this week, but the ones present sold to a buoyant trade with the best racing up to £78 and many of the best Dolgellau typed ewes sold well over the £50 mark. Top price of the day of £155 went to Tynybryn Farms and the best rams reached £127. More ewes required each week to satisfy demand.

STORE HOGGETS (200)
A similar entry of 200 Store hoggets present at today’s sale with some good quality stock forward, seeing a larger overall average in comparison to last week.
The sale peaked at £79.50 for tup hoggets from JM & JG Shearer, Cochsidan.
Mixed and clean hoggs peaked at £74 from HW Venables, Penygelly.
Theave hoggs saw a maximum price of £75 for a pen from RA Richards, Hafod.
With wether hoggs reaching a good price of £78 from the home of MD Bufton & JD Pryce, Cefn Y Berrin.
Mixed and tup hoggets saw a lower maximum price of £49 from Messrs Thomas Bros, Cefncribyn.

CADE LAMBS
A larger number of entries forward at this week’s sale with a total of 89 cade lambs on offer.
The trade saw a lower overall average of £8.54 this week in comparison to last week as the supply outweighed the demand.
The section topped at £20 for a ewe lamb from GE Davies & Sons, Bryndulas. Another cade reached a good price of £17 for a ewe lamb from DR Owen & Sons, Sandilands.

March Store Cattle Fair on Tuesday 26th March 2019
Morris Marshall & Poole with Norman Lloyd are pleased to report a highly successful sale of Store Cattle at the March Fair. The 950 cattle on offer attracted a large contingant of buyer with a number of new faces around the ring. Although the stronger cattle were harder sold than in previous sales the longer term grazing cattle were very much in demand with the average of steers being 222.75ppkg or £977.08 per head and heifers averaging 209.3ppkg or £888.99 per head and bulls 192.64ppkg or £1003.33 per head.
