Welshpool Livestock Sales report from their sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (24)

Well fleshed and feeding cows were in most demand especially the TB tested ones. Therefore vendors are encouraged to TB test their cows before sale as at the present moment it will be greatly benefical.

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £971.52 (ppkg) for a Hereford x

OTM weighing in at 759kg from Williams & Owen, Cyffiau. AP & GSI Davies, Blaen Y Glyn made 143ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 636kg making £909.48. OTM bulls topped at £1905.30 (174ppkg) for a British Blue bull weighing 1095kg from WS Jones, Fronhir. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £968.76 (138ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 702kg from ET Bound & Co, Tynymaes. Heifers under 48 months topped at £737.80 (155ppkg) for a heifer weighing 476kg from DS Humphreys & Co, New Mill Farm. Cows 48-72 Months (3) 132.36ppkg / £833.41

PRIME LAMBS (2815)

A larger entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 233.04ppkg, with a top price of 267ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 37.5kg making £100 from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage and also for 41.5kg lambs making £111 from DW & SM Roberts, The White House, which was top price per head.

Again an increase in number of spring lambs forward sold to a slower trade than last week at a price level similar to livestock markets prices from later in the week. Still good competitive bidding on all weights and grades, especially the better quality, better shaped, well fleshed lambs. Heavier weight lambs continue to be more difficult to sell however, this might change as hogget numbers become less.

Lighter weight lambs continue to sell to a strong demand so vendors are encouraged to keep drawing particularly well fleshed lambs.

Lights (288) to 257ppkg from P & CE Davies, The Crest. Others to 252ppkg from CE & GJ Roberts, Rhydycil. Average of 239.96ppkg.

Standards (271) to 267ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Others to 264ppkg from JE & SM Watkin & Son, Pentrego. Average of 240.64ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (2084)

A entry of hoggets forward sold to return an average of 173.30ppkg, with a top price of 223ppkg for pen of hoggs weighing 44kg making £98 from DG Davies, Lan, and £101.50/head for 47.5kg hoggets from DG Davies, Lan Farm.

A good late season number of hoggets forward sold to a much slower trade than last week, mostly due to the poor quality, finishing up, hoggs that were entered, and due to a lot of buyers changing over to spring lambs. However, best quality well fleshed hoggs sold to a competitve trade particularly for the handier weight 38-45kg hoggs. With more buyers switching off hoggs every week vendors are encouraged to sell any hoggets they have remaining as soon as possible (next week).
