Welshpool Livestock Sales report on their sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (28)

A similar number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1086.80 (152ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 715kg from VE Lewis & Son, The Garn. MPB Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu made 148ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 660kg making £976.80. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £931.70 (121ppkg) for a Devon weighing 770kg from TG Evans, Bettws Hall.   MPB Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu made 135ppkg for a Charolais x weighing 630kg making £850.50. Heifers under 48 months topped at £861.60 (120ppkg) for a Limousin x heifer weighing 718kg from M & JE Jones & DCE & MN Davies, Cwm Farm. TG Owen, Abernant made 126ppkg on a British Blue x heifer weighing 630kg making £793.80.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (17) 109.11ppkg / £723.21

OTM Bull (1) 104ppkg / £844.48

Cows 48-72 Months (7) 122.83ppkg / £792.59

Heifers Under 48 months (3) 108.39ppkg / £648.87

Overall Average 112.3ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3397)

An entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 206.87ppkg, with a top price of 288ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 44.5kg making £128/head from MP Evans, Llwynbrain.

A slightly larger entry of lambs forward sold to a very similar trade to last week which was in line with other local and national livestock market prices. Competitive bidding on all weights and grades of lambs especially the better quality types. Stronger demand for heavier weight, well fleshed lambs with plenty of pens selling above £100 per head. Export weight lambs also found a good demand throughout. Lightier weight lambs again sold to a two tier trade with poorer quality types proving more difficult to sell. Vendors are encouraged to keep drawing well meated lambs.

Lights (350) to 212ppkg from R Evans & Partners, Hafodyfoel. Others to 211ppkg from RG & BE Davies, Tycoch. Average of 199.13ppkg.

Standards (1186) to 225ppkg from S Lane, New Hall and LB Owen, Garth Vaughan. Others to 219ppkg from JW Power, Maesygraig and M Davies, Caerafon. Average of 201.74ppkg.

Mediums (1671) to 288ppkg from MP Evans, Llwynbrain. Others to 233ppkg from EL Andrew, Trewern Cottage.  Average of 210.84ppkg.

Heavies (170) to 222ppkg from HG Ellis & Co, Tynywern and IM & SE Woosnam, Sycamore Drive. Others to 221ppkg from D Jones & Sons, Tynwtra and GP Pugh & Son, The Garth. Average of 212.66ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (102) 

A small entry of hoggets forward sold to return an average of 162.10ppkg, with a top price of 185ppkg for pen of hoggets weighing 39.5kg making £73 from JE Jones, Tanffridd, and £84/head for 46kg hogget from GO & JA Jones, Wern Farm.

Standards (15) to 171ppkg from JR & ME Roberts, Pendarddlas. Others to 152ppkg from DH & A Parry, Caetwp. Average of 156.98ppkg.

Mediums (12) to 185ppkg from JE Jones, Tanffridd. Others to 164ppkg from DH & A Parry, Caetwp.  Average of 168ppkg.

Heavies (10) to 183ppkg from GO & JA Jones, Wern Farm. Others to 170ppkg from W Watson, Brynddu. Average of 171.43ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2806)

This week we saw an increased entry of 2770 cull ewes with an overall average of £62.06 (up £4.26 on the week). The best ewes on the yard sold to a terrific trade from start to finish with some Texel x and Suffolk x ewes being £10-15 dearer than last week with any amount of these selling between £90-£100. The best meated Welsh ewe were still a good trade with the best reaching £70 and the best Dolgellau type Welsh ewes reaching £54. However, the smallest leanest ewes were harder work this week. Top price of the day of £126 went to GM Mills, Penisaf Manledd closely followed by DT Evans, Fir Grove that sold ewes at £119.50. A terrific run of Mule ewes were presented by DJ Lloyd & Co, Cefnbarrach selling up to £92.

A smaller entry of 17 cull rams averaged £69.32 selling up to £98 for a Suffolk with others selling for £95, £94, £93 and £91.50.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 23 Cows and Calves met with a harder trade than that has been experienced in recent weeks. Leading the way was LH Lomas & Son, Manor Farm who achieved £1820 twice for two Limousin x British Blue 1st calvers with Wilodge Goldcard sired heifer calves.

D & E Davies, Ivy House sold a Hereford x 1st calver with her Govenor sired British Blue x bull calf at foot for £1500. From A Bradshaw & Co, Holt Preen Manor was a Limousin x 1st calver with her Salers x heifer calf which sold at £1560. G Evans, Bettws Hall sold a 2014 Devon x cow with a Limousin heifer calf for £1580, whilst two Stabiliser cows with Limousin bull calves at foot from the same home sold at £1520 and £1480.

A Pedigree British Blue stock bull from GW Watkins, Henllys sold at £1450.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows:
