Two thirds of Wales support the introduction of a charge for shopping bags, but local politicians are still critical at the way it has been introduced.
A total of 2,444 people were questioned by YouGov on behalf of Five News with 63% coming out in favour of the charge, but both Lib Dem and Conservative representatives say the Welsh Government still has a lot of work to do.
Gemma Bowker, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Montgomeryshire (right), said: “I support in principle the introduction of the charge but I do feel that the Labour administration in the Assembly have made this scheme too bureaucratic. I hope that the Welsh Government works closely with local business in order to sort out any problems that arise.
"The Lib Dems will be watching closely to ensure that firms are not adversely affected by efforts to make Wales greener and that the initiative is sustainable.”
Assembly Member Russell George met with shoppers in Newtown on Saturday and said the introduction was generally positive.
“All the business I have spoken to in Newtown have said they have had a positive response from the public, and the amount of bags leaving shops has reduced considerably,” he said.
“But businesses told me that they had not received information from the Welsh Government and many independent shop owners had relied on customers telling them.”
Regional Assembly Member William Powell said businesses who were still unclear should contact him on
william.powell@wales.gov.uk or by telephone on 01686 625527 for assistance and clarity.
