Town Hall future up for discussion

Welshpool’s iconic town hall is set to further diversify into a multi-functional building which could even incorporate a bowling alley or other leisure facilities.

An application is currently being processed to make the basement area available for ‘leisure’ use and tonight (Wednesday) a sub-committee will open discussions on what to do with the now vacant court room on the first floor.

The listed building, which is the town’s most valuable real estate valueed at more than £3m, is already used for a daily market, coffee mornings as well as functions like weddings and birthday parties.

But large parts of it still remained unused and the town council wants to put it to good use.

“The application for leisure use for the basement is going through and once received, we will ask the town what it would like to see,” said town clerk Robert Robinson. “The court room is now going to be looked at. We don’t believe the fittings are covered under any listed restrictions so it could become very useful. Its uses don’t necessary have to make money but should bring something to the community.”

The court room has been vacant since the judicial services were switched to Severn Street. In the coming weeks, a new kitchen will also be opened for the Town Hall’s Corn Exchange and its main doors are to be renovated.

Mr Robinson ruled out the town council moving there due to access issues.
