Shopping plans to be resubmitted

Mywelshpool has seen the new plans to be re-submitted to turn the Spar Car Park into a shopping centre.

Last month, Welshpool Town Council rejected the initial plans submitted by J Ross Developments for three national retailer units on the car park across the canal from the units already awaiting construction on the ‘Tesco’ side.

But despite councillors voicing numerous concerns about the shopping units’ affect on town centre trade, the message was sent back to the developers that a “more favourable consideration will be given to a scheme which includes a coach station and extra car parking”.

And the developers have now re-drawn their plans to include unused land behind the smaller part of the car park (ABOVE) together with other land already owned by the developers.

Nick Scott, chief executive of J Ross Developments, said: “We are consulting with councillors and planners in order to re-visit the scheme to see how we can incorporate consultation responses.

“This is an important project as it connects the Tesco supermarket with the town centre which will help to generate a vital and vibrant town economy. It was part of an integrated approach reflecting the Town Plan which was consulted on by the Town Council.

“We have been listening to comments from key local stakeholders, such as the Town Council and Local Authority and intend to consult on the proposed amendments before further information is submitted.”

Tesco opened its doors in February but despite promises of the other units being open for Christmas, the site still lies dormant (LEFT) leaving townsfolk wondering why there is such a rush to create even more unused shopping units.
