Local businesses go ‘social’

Thirty Powys businesses will soon be using social media to their advantage after learning about the power of online media networking at an event in Newtown.

The potential advantages of social media for businesses was highlighted at the event organised by the Welsh Government’s Supplier Development Service, managed by business development company Menter a Busnes.

It was held at the offices of marketing services company Ontrac Agency in Newtown, in conjunction with public and media relations consultancy OMB Communications.

Presentations by Alison McDougall of Ontrac and Owain Betts of OMB Communications, demonstrated the value and opportunities of using social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN.

“There’s a huge appetite out there from businesses that hear a lot about social media but they don’t necessarily know how to harness it to their advantage,” said Owain.

“The networking event demonstrated how social media cannot be ignored by businesses and why they need to take it seriously to win new business, contracts and engage with existing and potential customers. We also explored how it can help businesses collaborate and engage to win new opportunities,” he added.

Marian Harding, Managing Director at Ontrac, added: “The discussions during the event demonstrated how businesses appreciate they need to engage through social media but don’t necessarily know how.

“It helped identify the options for businesses and the commercial opportunities that exist as a result of embracing social media.”

Businesses attending the event came from Welshpool, Newtown, Montgomery, Llanfair Caereinion, Rhayader, Berriew and Foel.

Ontrac and OMB Communications are planning to host social media seminars in the future for businesses interested in learning more.
