Mid Wales in the Spotlight

05/03/2012 @ 03:20

A conference aimed at assisting Mid Wales businesses remain competitive and raise their game in a challenging economy takes place in Newtown on Friday.

Spotlight Mid Wales – Raising Our Game will be held at the Hafren and builds on last year’s highly successful Spotlight event attended by 220 delegates.

“The aim of the event  is to bring people together to form positive working relationships, offer new ways of working and inspiration during a challenging economic context” said Dai Davies, Development Manager, Federation of Small Businesses and Chair of Spotlight Mid Wales.

“Feedback from last year’s event suggests that delegates left feeling well informed, better connected and focussed for the future. Once again we have assembled a vibrant programme which includes excellent speakers, informative breakout sessions and a comprehensive exhibition area.”

This year’s conference presenter is Siân Lloyd, ITV’s national weather forecast presenter and delegates will discover how to achieve peak performance when keynote speaker Richard Parks (right) takes to the stage to share his inspirational story.

When his rugby career was cut short by injury in May 2009, he experienced fear, depression, anxiety and unanswered questions. Inspired by Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ book Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know and a line from his late grandmother’s eulogy ‘the horizon is only the limit of our sight’, Richard decided to face these feelings head-on by creating the 737 Challenge.

The 737 Challenge was to climb the highest summit on each of the world’s continents and stand on all three poles – The North Pole, The South Pole and the summit of Everest in the same calendar year and set a new benchmark in the climbing of the seven summits.

Along the way he faced a rollercoaster ride of dangers and dramas and his story and survivor spirit are sure to inspire delegates at the Spotlight Mid Wales event.

Also speaking will be Dr Paul Thomas, The Business Doctor and presenter of BBC Wales’ television documentary Ban the Boss

The conference will be opened by the Welsh Government’s Director General of the Department for Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science, James Price. John Walker, National Chairman of the FSB, will also be addressing delegates.

The conference’s main sponsor is the Federation of Small Businesses and the event is made possible through the collaboration of professional organisations and key partners including the Institute of Directors, Chartered Mangement Institute, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Leadership and Management Wales , Research and Enterprise Partnership Aberystwyth University and Bangor University, Mid Wales Manufacturing Group, Finance Wales, Powys County Council, Microsoft, Digital Gwynedd and Learning to Inspire. The conference is also being supported by the Welsh Government.
