Hair today, and not gone tomorrow!

Welshpool welcomed another barber shop this month and a quick head count will tell you that you can now get your hair cut at 16 places in and around the town centre.

Amidst the deepening economic doom and gloom, young entrepreneur Emily Larder has decided now is the time to invest in the industry, and Eclips has opened for business on Berriew Street.

It highlights a staggering trend in the town for an industry which appears to be recession proof at a time when other town centre businesses are feeling the squeeze like never before.

“I have heard that in times of recession, hairdressers and beauticians always excel for some reason,” said Emily. “Most of the hairdressing shops in town are well established, but there has been a definite rise in numbers over the past year or so, mostly local stylists opening their own businesses. These stylists already have a clientele, so there is not a great number of new stylists, just premises.

“I have decided to open because I've always wanted to start my own business and felt that the salon was in a prime location.

“I made inquiries about how busy other hairdressers were in town and kept being told how successful a lot of them are so I have decided to give it a go.”

Businesses have been up in arms lately about the impact that the one-way system and Tesco have made on town centre trade but it seems that the message to them from one industry at least is to 'keep your hair on!'.

The sweet 16: A quick ‘head count’ reveals the following salons and barbers are in town... have we missed anyone?

Reflections, Vivienne's, The Hair Studio, Cappelli's, Chris' Hairlines, Fitzgeralds, Flairs, Lad'n'dads, Vintage, The Barber Shop, Unique, The Cutting Company, Elenor Marie's, Snips, The Vogue, Eclips.
