Potter Group calls for more recycling

Potters Recycling is calling on the people of Powys to make an extra effort over their waste during the summer.

Potters Recycling, part of the Potter Group of companies, operates community recycling sites for Powys County Council at Welshpool, Newtown and Machynlleth.

And to mark the start of National Recycle Week, which runs from June 18-24, company Managing Director James Potter has called on residents to be extra vigilant at a time when waste levels are known to grow.

“With so much going on during the summer months waste levels will increase in almost every household,” he said.

“We have community recycling centre at Welshpool, Newtown and Machynlleth and would encourage everyone to make more use of these Powys County Council facilities.

“Our waste disposal yards are open to the residents of Powys for the free disposal of waste and we would like to encourage everyone to make full use of these facilities.”

Mr Potter’s views are echoed by Powys County Council which has teamed up with Waste Awareness Wales to encourage residents to make an extra special effort during Recycle Week 2012.

On an average day households in Wales get through a staggering 725,000 plastic bottles, however only half of these are currently recycled. With so many events taking place this summer waste production is expected to triple at certain times, so both organisations are working together to ensure that 2012 is a bumper year for recycling.

Steve Holdaway, Head of Local and Environmental Services at Powys County Council explains the aim of Recycle Week 2012: “If everyone in Wales recycles just one more plastic bottle each during Recycle Week, we’d save enough energy to power roughly 3,500 plasma TVs for a year.

“If we can encourage people to change their behaviour and start recycling as much as possible now, the difference it will make over the summer when we’re all likely to be out and about and creating a lot more waste will be huge.

“Most households in Powys have a kerbside recycling collection, or if not they can visit their nearest Community Recycling Site, so we’re hoping residents will be recycling as much waste as possible.
