Readers’ thumbs-down for one-way

26/02/2013 @ 07:46

Nothing gets our goat more these days than the one-way debate, and our latest Facebook poll has highlighted a huge division amongst MyWelshpool readers.

The picture (right) was also posted highlighting that one or two (and that seems hourly!) have still not gotten to grips with it and we revealed last week that even the makers of satnav maps were not aware, two years after it was introduced.

Hopefully that has been fixed with our intervention but a whopping 65% of readers that took part in the poll say they are still NOT in favour of the one-way system. Only 34% said they support it while 1% were not bothered.

There were more than 100 likes on this outrageous picture sent in by reader Colin Cooper with many saying the driver should be named and shamed! If you see any incidents like this, feel free to send them our way.

But the poll sends a serious message to the town planners that on the second anniversary of the road system, it still hasn’t won the hearts and minds of the people of Welshpool.

Some of the reader views:

AGAINST:

“The system was badly thought out, roads are not wide enough to take two lanes racing up the main street. Not a day goes by without some kind of incident.” John Evans

“Monday mornings are a nightmare with delivery trucks parking! Should be one lane and parking like Newtown. I’d be interested to know how many bumps have occurred in the time it has been running as I've witnessed and also just avoided a few!” Helen Powell

FOR:

“I think it is a good thing. I never went up Welshpool High Street before because it was like a three-lane car park. Now I frequently pop into a shop because I can park easily. Yes, there are some problems like the Spar end but in principle I think it is good. We do need a crossing in the middle of High Street though.” Debbie Paterson Gregory

“I’m very much in favour of it. Only two problems I can see is the merging traffic in Church Street and the street parking opposite Andrew’s chippie. Stricter enforcement of casual illegal parking in Severn Street would help too.” John Firth
