Welshpool should remember the fifth of November after Britain’s second biggest building society confirmed that it will open for business in the town next Friday.
The Yorkshire Building Society has filled the void left by the Halifax which closed down after more than 50 years of trading as an agency office at Cadwallader & Co LLP on Severn Street, and will celebrate with an open day inaugurated by Montgomeryshire MP, Glyn Davies.
Katie Jones, Agency Manager at Cadwallader & Co LLP said: “We would like to welcome Yorkshire Building Society to the town and thank them for choosing Welshpool to open their next agency branch. We hope our existing customers and local residents will call in to join us for a cup of Yorkshire tea to celebrate our future as a building society agency.”
Existing customers and members of the public are invited to attend the official open day event between 10am and 4pm on November 5. The opening ceremony will be at 11am when Mr. Davies will cut the ribbon. Refreshments will be served throughout the day and staff will be handing out white roses – the traditional symbol for Yorkshire.
The agency is one of nine to have opened this year as part of Yorkshire’s plans to extend its agency network.
Liz Morelli, Yorkshire’s Agency Development Manager said: “We are delighted to be opening a new agency in Welshpool. When looking for financial products we’ve found many customers value professional advice face to face which is why we consider having a high street presence to be as important as our telephone and internet channels. We are committed to the development of our agency network at a time when many other financial institutions are closing their agency offices.”
The Halifax closed its doors after being bought out by Lloyds Banking Group and has since closed all of its 250 agency offices across the UK.
