Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a busy action at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.
OTMS (33)
A slightly reduced entry of 33 OTMs met with a similar trade of 110.31ppkg for the older cows and 101.36ppkg for the younger cows. Topping the OTM section and receiving the Briarwood Products LTD prize of £25 for highest price on the day was from G E Davies & Sons, Cwmbromley, for a Limousin cow weighing £1176.57. Also from the same home was another Limousin cow weighing 732kg making £1156.56.An under 48 months Limousin heifer from D K Davies, Cwmydrefor, weighed 723 kg and made £1200.18.
FAT CATTLE (2)
NC & PR Nixon, The Willows, receives the Briarwood Products ltd prize of £25 for highest price on the day, for two Welsh Blacks weighing 541kg and 531kg both making 155ppkg.
PRIME LAMBS (8332)
With a very similar entry to last week of prime lambs, we saw an overall average of 179.44pp/kg.
Super Lights (171) to 181pp/kg from W Beamond, Cwmcarnedd. Others to 180pp/kg from A Wilson, Tyn Yr Ynn. Average of 175.77pp/kg.
Lights (1247) to 202p/kg from Davies Farmer, Red Hosue. Others to 195pp/kg from GW & WW Jones, Hill Farm. Average of 178.87pp/kg.
Standards (2092) to 222pp/kg from D E Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Others to 208pp/kg from M J Launder, Gyfylchau. Average of 178.65pp/kg.
Mediums (3197) to 227pp/kg from JM & SM Rowlands, Dolwen Farm. Others to 221pp/kg from J Jerman, Cloddia Farm. Average of 180.02pp/kg.
Heavies (1402) to 200pp/kg from T E Rowlands Ai Fab, Tyddyn Ddu. Others to 199pp/kg from CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Average of 170.33pp/kg.
Over Weights (169) to 172pp/kg from E L Evans & Co, Green Farm. Others to 168pp/kg C J Davies & Son, Waengwyn. Average of 153.85pp/kg.
CULL SHEEP (2633)
An increased entry of 2633 culls met with a good trade of £63.78 for ewes and £85.53 for rams. S J Smith, Penybryn, presented a pen of 6 ewes making £147 each. D P Casewell, Tanrhiw, had a single ewe making £132. Rams topped at £139 from JL & GM Edwards & Son, Llyswen Farm. O LL Jerman & Sons, Tuhwntirafon, presented 3 rams making £137.
STORE LAMBS
Another pleasing entry of 1202 store lambs, selling to an average of £57. Suffolk x theave lambs from W S Pritchard, Meadow Vale, sold to £66. With Texel x mixed/clean lambs from F M Lewis, Red Hosue, selling to £66.50. Texel x wether lambs from E T Jerman & Co, Cefngoleugoed, sold to £63.80. Whilst Zwartble tup lambs from D M Cooke, Coppice Farm, sold to £70. Averages were as follows: Theave lambs- £58.58. Mixed & Clean- £54.37. Wether Lambs - £56.94. Tup Lambs -£54.26. Mixed and Tup Lambs -£45.69.
Sale of store lambs will commence as normal next Monday, 22nd December, from 10.30am.
COWS & CALVES
An entry of 36 cows and calves met with a slightly reduced trade on recent weeks, but generally the quality on offer was back as well. Never the less demand was still good on the best outfits. Presented by E J Lewis, Rhoslas, were 3 Limousin cows with bull calves at foot which sold for £2350, £2129 and £2000. From S Lane, New Hall, Kerry, was a British Blue x 2nd calver with a Limousin Heifer calf at foot which sold for £2100. Presented by I G Jones, Buarth Yr Oen, Llanwrda, were 3 Limousin 1st calvers with one steer and two heifer calves which sold for £2000, £2200 and £2300 respectively. J Lewis, Grove Hollyhurst, Church Stretton, sold a Limousin x 1st calver with a Blonde bull calf for £2120, whilst a similar outfit from the same home made £1820. From D G Pryce, Broomhill, a Blonde x 1stcalver with a Limousin Heifer calf sold for £1950. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000 + 8 lots, £1800 - £2000 3 lots, £1600 - £1800 2 lots, £1400 - £1600 6 lots, £1200 - £1400 10 lots, £1000 - £1200 3 lots, < £1000 3 lots.
GLANTRE BELTEX
An entry of 44 purebred in-lamb Beltex ewes from M & H Owens, Glantre, Pont Sian, Ceredigion, the same home as the 2014 winning Royal Welsh Winter Fair lambs, met with a flying trade. The first pair of Beltex 2 year old ewes through the ring carrying singles sold to a sale topping £660 per head. Next at £420 were three two year old ewes, with 3 yearling ewes achieving the same price. Three year old ewes sold to a top of £320 twice. Overall the 44 ewes sold to an average of £325.91.
STORE CATTLE
A mixed bunch of store cattle met with a sound trade with demand on the best just as strong. With plenty of buyers for the cattle on offer, averages were 193.88ppkg or £801.76 for Bullocks, 178.74ppkg or £709.20 for heifers and bull were 208.61 or £831.67. The leading prices were as follows:
