Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a lively action at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday

OTMS (42)

An entry of 42 OTMs met with averages of 130.51ppkg for the older cows and 146.19ppkg for the younger cows. Topping the section was J W Rees & Son, Nantyrhendy, for a Charolais cow weighing 942kg making £1450.68. TH & GM Watkins & Son, Cefnllwyd, sold a Limousin cow weighing 785kg making £1342.35. A Charolais cow 48 to 72 months old from JW Ress & Son, Nantyrhendy, weighed 820kg making £1467.80. Steers under 48 months topped at £1047.15 for a Limousin weighing 537kg from J Parry, Esgairweddon. A total of 14 Cows made over £1000, with 12 buyers around the ring.

PRIME CATTLE (7)

7 prime cattle sold to an overall average of 202.62ppkg. Top price was achieved by G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach, for a Limousin top heavy weight heifer weighing 537kg making 253ppkg. Also for the same home was another top heavy heifer weighing 539kg making 249ppkg, and a top heavy steer weighing 712kg making 232ppkg. EE & MJ Jones & Son, Cwmbychan, presented an Aberdeen Angus top heavy steer weighing 617kg making 190ppkg, also two top heavy heifers one Limousin and one Angus weighing 531kg and 784kg making 190ppkg and 172ppkg respectively.

PRIME HOGGETS (3739)

A entry of 3739 prime hoggets saw an overall average of 186.69pp/kg.

Super Lights (30) to 184pp/kg from P Roughley, Hill Farm. Others to 179pp/kg from A & E Davies, Dolau. Average of 174.31pp/kg.

Lights (314) to 203pp/kg from CME Jones, Court Calmore. Others to 194pp/kg from SJ Smith, Penybryn. Average of 187.25pp/kg.

Standards (1016) to 207pp/kg from D E Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Others to 200pp/kg from CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Average of 184.99pp/kg

Mediums (1660) to 220pp/kg from D E Morgan & Co, Cefntwlch. Others to 213pp/kg from DR Owen & Sons, Sandilands. Average of 187.52pp/kg.

Heavies (525) to 198pp/kg from PL Howells, Tycam. Others to 190pp/kg from Probert & Probert, Lower Hill. Average of 180.80pp/kg.

Over Weights (121) to 181pp/kg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Others to 176pp/kg from RE & L Jones, Farchwel. Average of 162.81pp/kg.

CULL SHEEP (1411)

Cull ewes topped at £136 for a pen of 12 ewes from GL & JS & A Howells, Shadog Farm. A single ewe from A E Casewell, Bodynfoel, made £129. And a ewe from A & E Davies, Dolau, made £127. Rams topped at £139 for 3 rams from JL & JER Davies, Ffinnant. A single ram from GJE Hughes & Son, Old House, made £136. Ewes averaged £71.05 and rams averages £90.61.

Weekly sales of culls to commence at approximately 12 noon, after the sale of prime hoggs.

STORE LAMBS

Another seasonal entry of 164 store lambs, selling to a good trade for what was on offer, with an average of £55. Top price of the day went to S Ryan, Brookhouse Farm, for some big framed Texel x tup lambs which sold for £79. Texel x mixed and clean lambs forward from RJ Williams & KE Lewis, Farrington Farm, sold to £70. Other highlights saw strong Texel tup lambs selling to £68.20. Same again next week with store lambs selling from 10.30am.

Cade Lambs

A bigger entry of cade lambs this week seeing 48 forward. They sold to a very good average of £16. Top price of the day went to GO Jones & JA Lewis, Wern Farm, selling to £26. 12 lambs out of the 48 sold achieved £20 or more.

IN-LAMB EWES

This week saw an entry of 83 in lamb ewes. Top price of the day went to TL & PA Bennett, Dolgead Farm, selling yearling Texel x ewes for £98.These were scanned at 140%, due to a Texel tup from 27th March. 2 and 3 year old Texel ewes form the same home achieved £92. This week saw a special entry of 40 Mule 4 and 5 year old ewes, forward from A & S Watson, Rhos Farm, overall these were scanned at approximately 200% and due to a Suffolk x tup. They sold to an average of £80.

Couples

This week saw an entry of 102 couples. Top price went to J Payne, Plas Trehelig, for strong 2 year old Mule ewes with cracking lambs at foot making £180. A good entry forward from JM & IM Lewis, Erwbarfe, sold well with a top price for a bunch of Charollais ewes with good ewe lambs at foot making £174. 3 and 4 year old ewes with single lambs at foot sold to £150. Improved welsh as found ewes with single lambs at foot sold to £112. Same again next week with couples following the sale of store lambs.

DAIRY COWS

An entry of 4 dairy cows saw a top price of £1500 for a Pedigree Holstein Friesian Heifer sired by England-Ammon Million ET forward from M R Williams, Wern Holding. K S Jones, Lane Farm, presented three Holstein Friesian Heifers the first sired by Ashowen Speedster Rose making £1460, another sired by Aragon making £1420 and the last sired by Topshot making £1400.
