Welsh honours for local stars

Llanfair Caereinion Ladies Hockey Club celebrated the inclusion of Hannah Bailey and Sara Rudd in the Welsh squad by beating Northop Hall 4-2 at the weekend.

The pair were selected through trials and made their debut against England last week, but it was back to club action at the weekend for their teammates with a tricky match against the North Walians.

Llanfair adjusted to their new formation well and opened the scoring through Angharad Davies from the edge of the D after 14 minutes. Youngster Ffion Roberts, who was also selected for Welsh trials but unfortunately missed out on the squad, added a second with a well-taken goal before Debra Barker and Louise Wilde combined for Wilde to make it 3-0 from a tight angle.

Llanfair started the second half as they finished the first, and Barker scored with a reverse stick effort. But they took their foot off the pedal, allowing Northop Hall to catch them on the break twice.

This Saturday they host Ardudwy with a 1pm start.

Meanwhile, Welshpool slumped to a disappointing 6-1 defeat against Bangor who were 5-0 up at half time. Shell-shocked Welshpool fought back in the second half but Ceri Chapman’s goal was no more than a late consolation.
On Saturday, they have a trip to Ruthin
