Festival of Sport plans
Sports clubs and organisations in Welshpool are being invited to attend a meeting to resurrect the town’s annual Festival of Sport.
The once-popular festival has not run for several years and used to see annual events taking place all across the town organised by local clubs, often encouraging newcomers to try out various sports.
Welshpool Town Council’s Events and Tourism Committee recommended relaunching the festival and the council is now approaching local sports bodies to ask them to attend a meeting at the Town Hall on Tuesday, February 21st at 7-15pm.
Councillor Chris Davies, chairman of the Events Committee, said: “This was once a very popular annual event and it is disappointing that it was allowed to disappear from the town’s calendar.
“Over the years it provided an opportunity for many people to try out various sports, from golf to cricket and bowls to football, helping to boost club membership and create greater awareness. In my younger years I took part myself.
“As a council we are keen to gauge if there is interest from local clubs and organisations to resurrect the festival and take responsibility for organising their own events with our support.”
