Weekend offenders

Welshpool revellers have been told to tidy up after themselves after we can reveal that 95% of litter collected every Monday in town is either alcohol, smoking or takeaways related.

The shameful figure was shared with us by Welshpool Town Council who are responsible for keeping the town tidy, having adopted the service last year from Powys.

And it was highlighted by Welshpool resident Dennis Duggan who on Saturday posted a Facebook picture of “the haul from one of my regular litter picks on Brook Street”.

The picture (right) shows takeaway packets, booze cans and boxes and he also pointed out that some dog mess had been placed into bags then thrown into the hedge.

“Our lads on a Monday have more to do,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson. “From the litter picked up 50% is alcohol/drink related, 30% is smoking related, 15% takeaway litter with all the rest only 5%.

“The Town Council has just taken delivery of 20 new litter bins to support the existing ones. Welshpool is looking better but it will be a lifetime battle.

“If only people used the bins and did not drop their cigarette ends the town would be much easier to manage.

“Fly tipping has reduced since the Town Council picks up the odd bits here and there to stop stockpiling. Also our reaction to reports of litter is quick - often within the hour.”

Mr. Robinson said that the hotline - 01938 553142 – is available for residents to call should they see a litter problem. You can also report at wtcouncil@btinternet.com.
