The call of the wild
Stiwart Breese (pictured) moved, with his wife Tracey, to the mountains of North Wales to develop their business in 2014. His dream was to be able to work full-time in the outdoors and as of this month he has achieved his goal.
“It’s been a big step changing career after nearly 30 years in engineering and management,” said Stiwart. “I’ve always loved mountains but to work in the outdoors and be able to provide opportunities for other people to gain new experiences is a real dream come true.”
Stiwart built on his experience of walking and climbing mountains all over the world and qualified as a mountain leader in 2013. Since then he has helped provide safe and enjoyable experiences for hundreds of others both through Breese Adventures and by working for other outdoor companies and expedition providers.
Breese Adventures now provide everything from tailored outdoor adventures for individuals and small groups to charity challenges for hundreds of people. This year they are creating a brand new walking event called The Snowdonia Challenge from June 30-July 2, inspired by one of Tracey’s personal challenges.
“The Snowdonia Challenge is inspired by the Nijmegen Marches which I took part in in 2009,” said Tracey. “This was such an amazing experience and a real test of mental and physical resilience.”
The Nijmegen Marches is a four-day event in the Netherlands which started over 100 years ago and now attracts 46,000 people every year. Civilians and military teams ‘march’ 30, 40, or 50km each day.
The Snowdonia three-day event, which sees walkers take on 100km, is already attracting individuals and teams from across the UK, some of whom are using the unique opportunity to fundraise for their favourite cause. A slice of the money raised will also be pumped back into the wellbeing of the park.
Stiwart added: “Where better to hold an event like this? North Wales was recently voted the fourth best place in the world to visit by Lonely Planet. Each morning of the challenge walkers will start from Betws-y-coed and follow a different route through the stunning Snowdonia mountains and forests, finishing back in the village.”
Stiwart said he has never looked back since that life-changing decision to ditch the 9-5 work routine, with his new life on the mountains answering his call to the wild.
