100th birthday celebrations for Welshpool's Normandy Veteran
Normandy veteran Elvet Davies has celebrated his 100th birthday at Welshpool.
Friends and relatives marked the event with parties this week and Welshpool Town Mayor Councillor Steve Kaye and Town Clerk Robert Robinson visited along with Powys County Council’s Montgomeryshire chairman Councillor Kath Roberts-Jones and Councillor Graham Breeze, who made presentations.
Born in Cemmaes and a proud Welsh speaker, Mr Davies stared life in a local bakery before moving to Oxford where he was called up for National Service and joined the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
He was stationed in Northern Ireland where he met his late wife Violet and later took part in the Normandy D-Day Landings, then transferring to the Gordon Highlanders before being discharged in 1946.
He trained as a welder before retiring to Welshpool at the age of 62 with his wife Violet who passed away in 2000.
Mr Davies was a keen fisherman and bowler and is a member of Blind Veterans UK and Welshpool’s Visually Impaired Club.
“It’s hard to believe I’m 100,” said Mr Davies who can be seen daily around the town. “I have been blessed with lovely family and friends and there is no secret to my longevity. I must be lucky because I could have been killed many times during the war.”
