Could this become the go-to cultural event of the year?

Five of the most in-demand contemporary poets in the UK have all been included on the bill for the 3rd Welshpool Poetry Festival from June 9-10.

The news is a tremendous boost to a festival which organisers hope will grow into one of the go-to cultural events of the year.

The festival launched in 2015 as a one-day event on a Thursday and due to its success, it was held over a June weekend last year. It attracted visitors from across the UK which gave organisers the encouragement they needed to think big.

“This year, funding from Arts Council Wales and the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund administered by the Rotary Club of Oswestry, has enabled us to secure five of the most current, in-demand contemporary poets,” said Pat Edwards, one of the organisers. “I know these poets have a wide following and that people will love coming to Mid Wales to hear them and to enjoy what Welshpool has to offer.

“The future of the festival depends not just on funding but on local support. We're hoping to involve local businesses again this year by inviting them to display poetry in their windows.

“The introduction of open and children's poetry competitions is also a welcome addition.

“Wouldn't it be great to see Welshpool Poetry Festival/Gwyl Farddoniaeth Y Trallwng take its place alongside the go-to cultural events of the year?”
