A Berriew youngster has been named as the Lord Lieutenant's Army Cadet of the year for Powys.

Cadet Colour Sergeant Jonathan Davies, the son of Joe Davies and Elaine Williams, received the award last week from the Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Legge-Bourke.

Jonathan’s commendation read: “Cadet Colour Sergeant Jonathan Davies is a very articulate young man, matured beyond his age and an excellent example to his peers.

“He very much enjoys the challenges that the cadet movement presents to him and is an exceptional example of youth within his community and without exception a leading light at Welshpool High School.”

Colour Sergeant Davies is recognised in the school for his leadership, unbiased guidance and advice to fellow pupils. He is a member of the School Council, whose aim is to encourage and help develop the younger pupils.

He has achieved excellent results in his GCSE grades and hopes to obtain A level grade in Physics, Design & Technology and ICT to allow him to pursue his ambition to join the RAF and to obtain a commission.

He was a member of the Welshpool Detachment who turned out during HM the Queen's visit to Welshpool last May. Later he volunteered with others to represent the Army Cadets from Powys who attended the medals parade for 1st Battalion RWF at Chester in June, in the presence of HM the Queen.

He has gained his silver medal in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and now plans to gain gold. He is a popular cadet within Gwent and Powys ACF.
