Canal work will bring huge benefits

20/06/2017 @ 07:16

A multi-million pound project to connect the Montgomery Canal to the national network will bring massive benefits to the Welshpool area, campaigners believe.

And to demonstrate just how the area can cash in from the work, residents and businesses are being invited to a forum being organised by the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust.

“These are exciting times for the Montgomery Canal,” said Michael Limbrey, Chairman. “The next stages of restoration are under way with the aid of a £2.5 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the Restore The Montgomery Canal appeal is raising funds for the volunteers to carry on after that.

“The forum will be an opportunity to learn more about the restoration and plans for its future, looking at the benefits achieved by other canal restorations across the country in terms of visitors, business growth and property values.”

There will be an opportunity to discuss any issue concerning the future of the Montgomery Canal and what it can contribute to the area.

The Forum is a public meeting, open to anyone interested in the restoration and development of the Montgomery Canal for present and future generations.

The forum will take place from 2.30pm on July 3 at Oswestry Golf Club, Queen's Head, Shropshire, SY11 4JJ.

Current restoration projects and the appeal for the next stages of restoration can be found at www.RestoreTheMontgomeryCanal.uk.
