Council seeks £200,000

Welshpool Town Council is seeking up to £200,000 Heritage Lottery Funding to support two tourism projects.

The council has agreed to go ahead in principle to complete the restoration of the ancient monument site at the Motte and Bailey Castle along with the creation of a living museum in the disuse courtroom in the Town Hall.

In a report to this week’s council meeting Town Clerk Robert Robinson said Heritage Lottery Fund officers had confirmed that both projects could attract up to £100,000 funding.

“The council has been considering a positive use for the courtoom for some time and is of a mind to take forward a scheme to try and preserve history, particularly as the council archives have now progressed in their organisation with the employment of an archives officer since 2010,” he said.

He described the Motte and Bailey Castle site as an important historic monument. “Due to its location and its historic ancient monument status the site is considered to be one of the most important in the area.”

The site comprises the Motte and Baiey Caste, a Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway Transfer Station and one of the last remaining crown green bowling greens in Wales.
